PostPosted: Aug 18, 2015 08:48    Post subject: Re: Collection of Fiebre Verde - Muzo with doubly terminated quartz (#568)

Doubly terminated quartz are not commonly seen in the Colombian emerald belts.
Note that the beryl crystal is also terminated.

The little story behind this specimen is pretty common.
The dealer had a small lot of high quality thumbnail specimens which he had on deposit from a comisionista (Local name for the emerald brokers in Colombia - owners rarely sell directly their goods).
Even after buying the lot, I could never get hold of the comisionista's name and even less the owner's name...
Sources are jealously protected specially in the small market of Bogota - nothing really surprising here.
Makes the hunt a bit more challenging (and pricey).

PostPosted: Aug 28, 2015 14:26    Post subject: Re: Collection of Fiebre Verde - Chivor with ??? (#569)

This Chivor specimen is very likely from San Gregorio mine.

I have seen the black opaque crystal with sharp edges featured in the last image on several Chivor specimens but can't figure out what it is. A Dolomite rhomb?

Host rock is a crumbly grey shale.

PostPosted: Sep 09, 2015 15:01    Post subject: Re: Collection of Fiebre Verde - La Pita (#559)

This aggregate was sold to me as from Chivor but the vivid grass-green coloration makes me think that it's actually from the La Pita mining district.

Out of the three chromophoric elements (V, Cr, Fe) of natural emeralds, only vanadium and chromium are found in significant concentration in Colombian emeralds.
Various studies have shown that the ratio of V/Cr is much higher in the La Pita emeralds than in any of the other Colombian districts.
The high concentration of vanadium versus chromium is responsible for the grass-green coloration of the La Pita emeralds.

Agree, calcite seems a more reasonable guess Jordi.
Never seen specimens with quartz vugs in the emerald districts.

PostPosted: Dec 12, 2015 15:46    Post subject: Re: Collection of Fiebre Verde - Calcite with deep striations - La Pita (#541)

Calcite crystals show deep striations.
Striated calcite is not uncommon in the La Pita district but this specimen exhibits a pattern which looks more like a series of ridges than ordinary striation.
I would love to hear an explanation on this - growth pattern? else?

Hello Fiebre Verde,
It seems like an etching-dissolution pattern.

Thanks for answering Yowanni!

I ruled out this possibility because of the geometric regularity of the patterns observed on all faces of the calcite crystals.

I am interested to know if anyone here has already came across this type of patterns.

I have seen calcites with that pattern after hydrochloric acid treatment.

very likely in your specimen.

A combined process to form "interesting looking crystals" out of damaged or cleaved Calcite???
First a scratch job with a file (pocket-knife-file?) and then a short acid bath?
So much work to manufacture an average specimen, at best?

More questions than answers...

Thanks Minsur, Jordi & Rocardo. Seems like we have a consensus on the origin of these strange patterns!

This does not really come as a surprise to me as emerald sculptures and carvings is an important business in Bogota. Usually the artistic emphasis is focused on the low-grade emerald material and not the surrounding crystals!

Can't remember how this specimen ended up in my collection.
