PostPosted: Oct 31, 2014 08:10    Post subject: Re: Collection of Fiebre Verde - La Pita/Cunas

Another specimen from the Cunas mine in the La Pita mining district.
The black shale host rock (which does not appear in the photos) is coated with dark grey calcite which gives a striking contrast with the grass green tones of the emerald crystals.
These photos do not do any justice to the specimen - this is a quite challenging contrast for a camera (and for my photo skills!). It gets worse with black calcite but if you happen to run into these little treasures (black calcite + grass green emerald) in real life then you just relax and enjoy the scenery.
The back of the specimen is coated with tiny nodules of crystallized pyrite.
Longest emerald crystal is 29mm.

PostPosted: Nov 01, 2014 21:24    Post subject: Re: Collection of Fiebre Verde - Peñas Blancas

This specimen from Peñas Blancas features several emerald crystals - the largest one is 22mm - embedded in the typical matrix of iron-stained calcite.
There are 2 unusual features in this specimen
1) The main emerald crystal is partly coated with lace-like patches of white calcite.
2) The large scalenohedrons of yellowish calcite (up to 3cm long) which is not very common even for this locality give the specimen a striking appearance
There are also some small translucent quartz crystals around the central cavity.

PostPosted: Nov 09, 2014 16:43    Post subject: Re: Collection of Fiebre Verde - Peñas Blancas

A small but unusual specimen from Peñas Blancas.
The carbonaceous fine-grained argillite shale is penetrated by iron-stained fractures.
The shale is coated by creamy and translucent calcite crystals.
The most striking feature is the termination of the emerald which exhibits an unusual dipping tabular form.

PostPosted: Nov 14, 2014 13:30    Post subject: Re: Collection of Fiebre Verde

I am astounded at the depth of your collection of South American emeralds. It is definetly hard for me to peg which specific specimens I enjoyed looking at, because I really have enjoyed looking at all of them. My particular favorites are the Emerald, Calcite, Pyrite and Albite combination specimen from Muzo, Boyacá, Colombia (IMG_5671.JPG, pg. 2) and the Emerald, Calcite and Pyrite specimen from the La Pita mining district, Cunas Mine, Boyacá, Colombia (IMG_7235.JPG, pg. 3). I was shocked at the color of the rock quartz crystal on emerald from Muzo mining district, Boyacá, Colombia (IMG_5837.JPG, IMG_5847.JPG, pg.1). Wow! What an oddball….

I am curious about the purple mineral on your emerald and calcite specimen from the La Pita mining district, Cunas Mine, Boyacá, Colombia (IMG_5774.JPG, pg.1 and IMG_5741.JPG, pg. 1). Is that fluorite or is it another mineral?

PostPosted: Nov 15, 2014 19:02    Post subject: Re: Collection of Fiebre Verde - Purple fluorite?

Thank you Jamison.

I have been collecting seriously only in the last 10 years or so and am in the process of tiding up my inventory.
As the vast part of my collection is stored in cases (It’s either this or a divorce), I am “rediscovering” some old specimens I had almost forgotten about and the more I unpack and take pictures the more I am astonished by the wide variety of matrix and crystal habits of the Colombian emeralds.
I have started purposely this Colombian green journey with the Western Emerald Belt (Peñas Blancas, Muzo, Coscuez & La Pita) and at some point I will go East (Eastern Emerald Belt, Chivor mainly and Gachalá).
Hopefully the contrast between these two districts will show up nicely in the photos.
Emeralds are quite difficult to be rendered in the digital imaging world even with the correct equipment and settings. Tone subtleties, multiple reflections (internal and external), matrix contrast... I have to compromise.

Back to your question.
Well spotted! Never noticed these purple patches.:-(
I attached a couple of snapshots. It’s a shame I cannot get better quality pictures.
Fluorite is not uncommon in the Western Belt. Fluorites are commonly seen in Peñas Blancas (green variety) but can be also found in Muzo and to a lesser extent in Coscuez and La Pita.
What surprises me more is the color – I have never seen purple Fluorite from the Western Emerald Belt but I know it does occur. They come up mostly green or colorless.
I realize the pictures do not help much – but you are right, Fluorite is a good candidate.

PostPosted: Dec 27, 2014 17:53    Post subject: Re: Collection of Fiebre Verde

2014 is almost coming to an end and I haven't posted yet any specimen from the Chivor mining district. The Chivor district is part of the Eastern Emerald Belt and produces emeralds with different crystal habits and tones than their Western counterparts. The 2 belts are about 100km apart.

This specimen comes from a small pocket which is known for having produced small (= few mm long), lustrous crystals with complex pyramidal termination.
One of the trademarks of this pocket are the aggregates of pyrite crystals (with predominant dodecahedron habit) on which are directly embedded the emeralds.
In this pocket, grey and white calcite are often associated to the pyrite. Due to their small size, they are hardly seen in the attached images.
This specimen also contains 2 dark grey well-formed dolomite rhombs (~1cm long).
Host rock is a greyish shale dusted with pyrite..

Thanks Pierre.
This is (was) truly an amazing pocket as all the specimens I have seen are consistently spectacular: Massive aggregates of pyritohedrons and small but lustrous emerald crystals with complex pyramidal terminations.
The cherry on the cake is the crystallized dolomite which, unlike calcite, is uncommon in the Chivor mining district.

Hi Gérard. Did you mine or purchase the pocket? Perhaps it is a secret! It does not matter, it is a fantastic find that few of us will ever have the privelege to enjoy. Regards.

Thanks for sharing your enthusiasm Pierre!
Rewarding rockhounding can be complicated in the Colombian emerald mining areas. It requires some PR work, logistics and ... luck! (in the disorder)
I came way after the battle and the production in the El Acuario pit had already stopped. But I was lucky enough to get hold of a few samples from the local dealers.
Posting more samples from this remarkable find is part of my new year's resolutions :-)
By the way, Ploum/Fred has posted one just a few days ago.

Not everything is green in Muzo...
Golden yellow Baryte can also be found in tabular form.
In his beryl bible "Emerald And Other Beryls", Sinkankas states that Baryte crystals can be found in some emerald vein vugs.
I never came across a specimen where emerald and Baryte coexist.
When present, host rock is black shale.

Back to green with a remarkable El Acuario specimen.
Host rock is grey shale coated with sparkling pyrite and light grey to translucent calcite.
Main emerald has complex faces and pyramidal termination.
There are 2 smaller emeralds on the side.

I really enjoy browsing your gallery :-) I like beryl very much in general and the emerald has always been one of the most beautiful and "magical" minerals/gemstones in the world for me. Its stunning colour combined with its long history as a gem and its meaning for mankind (not only from a material but also from a mythological point of view) thrilled me from the beginning, even when I was a young boy who collected some minor rocks und couldn't even dream of once owning such a wonderful specimen. There's only one emerald from Colombia in my collection, and it is far away from the quality of yours, I really admire those beautiful gems and hope there are still a lot to come!

Thanks
Tobi

PostPosted: Dec 31, 2014 06:31    Post subject: Re: Collection of Fiebre Verde - La Pava (Muzo)

La Pava good quality specimens are relatively uncommon.
Typical La Pava color e.g. very light green. Makes you wonder if beryls from La Pava should be called Emerald or Green Beryl. Vast debate which I will **not** open on this very last day of the year!!
What is more interesting than the color here is the interaction of the quartz with the emerald. The quartz crystal tip is standing slightly over the emerald termination. Unfortunately the rest of the crystal can hardly be followed in transparency as it angles deeply towards the host rock (black shale).

Right! Sometimes it is good not to be too academic! It is a wonderful shaped beryl crystal on matrix which makes it a really nice mineral specimen, that's what counts :-)

Nice to know that beryls have a fan club in this forum Tobi! Thanks for cheering up.
I fell in the emerald trap a while ago and for sometime I thought I could get cured.
So I tried aquamarine for a short while but aqua blue didn't work well for my eyes.
During a trip to Tanzania, I thought I could maybe fool my green addicted eyesight with the local variety of grossular. Those didn't help much either.
So here I am, (happily) left with emeralds and still a lot to come in the future.

A glassy crystal from La Pava.
The matrix is also interesting with patches of black shale all over the specimen.
There are some pyrite nodules in the back (not shown in the pictures).
