Lovely apatite Gérard, and from a unusual locality, thanks for sharing. It's a pleasure this pink touch in your green jungle.
Color and transparency reminds me some Baltistan apatites that are very fluorescent, especially under short wave. Did you checked fluorescence?

Many thanks for your appreciation Josele!
Although I don't need to restate that I am slightly biased towards the green variety of beryls, I am interested in all matrix specimens when visiting Colombia (Which happens 2-3 times a year).
Problem is that apatite, parisite, euclase, barite, or even sphalerite are rarely seen in matrix in the Bogota market.
Matrix specimens are undervalued by the miners who believe they can make a good business by extracting and selling crystals - probably a habit inherited from the way emeralds are mined.
I wish I could find that unknown miner who understood what he was doing by carefully extracting that matrix specimen, and congratulate him on the fantastic job he has done!
Regarding your last comment... I have yet to invest in a short-wave UV lamp :-(

I have a few of the Colombian Fluor-Apatites, and they do light up a nice pink under my Convoy... no idea about SW though.

And I do agree with the problem in Colombia of loose crystals over specimens on matrix....
...and in my opinion another problem related to buying anything other than emeralds is that sellers tend to think that everything should be priced like emeralds!

Exactly! In the local mineral business - which is by the way only a side business - emeralds set the price standards.
And when discussing the price with the seller, it is difficult to cut out the artificial inflation of prices with sensible arguments.
The negotiation becomes even more difficult if the specimen comes from one of the emerald districts.
And if that mineral happens to be green then it must be emerald - no wonder why the most expensive fuchsites on earth are from Colombia :-)

White striated calcite, quartz, with patches of limonite.
Most of the beryl crystals are "canutillos" - a Colombian miner's term which denotes prismatic gem crystals too small and too thin to be faceted, but are sometimes set into jewelry.
Host rock is coarse-grained black shale.

PostPosted: Dec 27, 2018 10:43    Post subject: Re: Collection of Fiebre Verde - Chivor (#731)

Four emerald crystals with a slight bluish cast. Main one is double terminated.
On the opposite side, a rather large and lustrous pyrite dodecahedron in a dolomite vug.
Host rock is a typical hydrothermal breccia (called locally "cenicero" i.e. ashtray, generally, well delimited white coloured zone which has the aspect of ash) which consists of tiny remnants of black shale and folded albitite fragments in a matrix of albite.
Note that these thrust-related folds are synchronous to emerald deposition and to the mineralizing episode at large.
The fluid circulation associated to the hydrothermal breccia has induced intense albitisation, carbonatisation and pyritisation of the surrounding black shales.

PS: Specimen is from a locality not available in the dictionary list.
Chivor mining district, Camoyo Mine, Municipio Chivor, Eastern Emerald Belt, Boyacá Department
Could one of the administrators be kind enough to add this entry in the locality list for Colombia? Much appreciated!

20+ elongated beryl crystals, some of them are bent by a few degrees.
Difficult to determine if the curvature is caused by post-crystallization deformation and recrystallization or if is due to syn-crystallization events.
Druse of bluish albite, pyrite, on an iron-stained black shale.

Very likely from the Camoyo mine.

Rare association of emerald and pink fluorapatite from Chivor - exact locality unknown.
Unlike the fluorapatite, the emerald is barely crystallized.
The brittle calcite matrix contains remnants of the host rock in the form of black shale lenses.

Coscuez crystal with an intense green color.
Some of the small grey dolomite crystals exhibit almost a metallic luster.
Calcite crystals have slightly striated faces.
Host rock is black shale
