Then maybe it could be from ACF. Some skeletal crystals appear there too...

Heres an old specimen I was able to get my greedy hands on, this stuff is so rare its ridiculous. Wulfenite from the Kinniside Mine, this piece dates to the 1960's,

Ive spent the last couple of years looking for a near perfect gemmy Hilton Mine Fluorite thumbnail and just a couple of weeks ago I hunted through a big pile of boxes in my nearest decent rockshop and came up with this, its a tight squeeze but it just fits into a thumbnail box.. Im really pleased with it so I thought Id share..

Cool! Just some days ago that i browsed the web for Hilton Mine fluos because i got interested in those nice yellow cubes of my favourite mineral. A nice English classic.

Thanks Tobias, Its quite hard to find good Hilton pieces, depending on your veiwpoint, a lot have white centres and even more are dinged, as I said it took me a couple of years to find one I was happy with, I have looked at and rejected literally hundreds of specimens before I came across this one. It is, as you say, an English classic.
The next thing on my wish list is a perfect Rogerley Mine Fluorite twin from the days when the Greenbanks mined there,. Ive got a good cabinet matrix piece from then but Id like a perfect thumbnail twin.

Here are my current three favourite pieces all are from the Haggs Mine at Nentsberry in Alston Moor,
First up is an unusual hollow Baryte epimorph after Witherite.
Second is a Witherite without any surface alteration to Baryte, which is fairly uncommon at Haggs.
Third ia a Baryte pseudomorph after Alstonite

Oh yeh, some of you may be intrigued by the fact that the Baryte Epimorph after Witherite is an ex Patricia Greenbank piece, (PG108)

Hello, I dont suppose anyone knows a mine for this Wulfenite? It is labelled simply as "Granada, Spain" which is a bit vague.
Im a huge fan of the Ojuela Mine, you can get some really interesting specimens that will keep you guessing as to what is on them for years, this piece has sharp Mimetite hexagonal prisms, the matrix for this piece contains Arsenbrackebuschite and Segnitite, also there appears to be a patch of Tsumcorite on there but Im only going on a comparison with my other (XrD verified) Tsumcorite from Ojuela.

PostPosted: Dec 27, 2011 07:13    Post subject: Re: Collection of Nurbo

The Spanish wulfenite comes from the Quéntar mines, near the Quéntar dam in Granada province (Spain).
The group of mines are called Barranco del Tintín mines, and this piece is from the shaft of the first mine, just where this barranco has its entrance.
I was digging these pieces in the lastest 80s getting down about 40m. in that shaft...the rest of the mine was full of water due its communication with the lake.
I don't know the name of the mine, only the group name but I hope this helps.
Joaquin

Thanks Joachin, thats very helpful. Collecting such Wulfenites must be a fantastic experience. Wulfenite is pretty scarce here in the UK.
Here is a Pyrophyllite that was a gift from my good friend Frank in Australia, isnt it astonishing the air miles these things can accumulate! This piece travelled about 20,000 miles before I got it.

Nurbo, after a little research, I could find the name of the mine, so your piece would be in the label:

Wulfenite.- San Lázaro Mine, Barranco del Tintín, Quéntar, Granada (Spain).

P.S. I add a pic of a wulfenite mined in 1985 in other mine near this, in a deep tunnel in front of San Lázaro, but with a different habit.

Regards and Merry Christmas

PostPosted: Dec 28, 2011 13:23    Post subject: Re: Collection of Nurbo

For someone born in Granada, it is very interesting that a wulfenite specimen has gone beyond the Spanish borders. For this reason, I thought it was worthy asking one of the best connoisseur of the wulfenites from Granada: José Miguel Sola. He has spent part of his life collecting and studying this species in several mines of this Spanish province.

Kindly, he has read the Spanish thread about this wulfenite and has answered the following points:

a) Definitely it is a wulfenite not from Tintín (San Lázaro Mine), Quéntar, Granada. Neither the matrix nor the habit are similar. This mine yielded only tabular wulfenites.

b) This specimen likely comes from Barranco del Humo mines, Albuñuelas, Granada. The dark matrix with calcite and the dipiramidal habit are true clues.

c) The specimens from the classic Barranco del Humo mines display both habits: tabular and dipyramidal. The last one frequently with polycrystalline growings like Nurbo's specimen.

José Miguel Sola's opinion is for me definitive in this case. Other collectors from Granada also agree with him.

Nice specimen indeed!!

Regards

Hello Antonio, I was surprised to see Wulfenite from Spain available in the UK, its the only one Ive ever seen so I was very pleased to add it to my small but increasing collection of this interesting specie.. Many thanks for researching the locality for me, I will update my label and database.
