Amethyst from Kearsarge, Inyo Mts, Inyo Co., California, USA

Mike,
Interesting rock: https://www.mineral-forum.com/message-board/download.php?id=59242 , I have never seen an amethyst from the Inyo Mts. Kearsarge refers to both a mining town in the Sierra Nevada Mts, and a community east of Independence (on the alluvial fill), so I suspect this should be labeled Kearsarge District, not just Kearsrage which is ambiguous.

Can you tell me who it came from, as that might help clarify?. You can PM me if you don't want to tell. ;=))
Bob

Bob - I got the piece from John Seibel. The collection he got it from was mostly self collected quartz from obscure California localities. No mention of who the original collector was. The label does say Kearsarge Mountain. My mistake.

Mike,

I suspect it is from the Kingston Range. There are not very many amethyst localities in California. The only other significant localities are Halleluiah Junction and a Mono County locality, both of which produce scepters. Kingston has produced DT amethysts perched on clear/light smoky matrix, kind of like yours. Of course, none of this means this isn't from a small isolated pocket. Kearsarge Peak (not Mountain) is in the Sierra Nevada Mts, and is in Inyo County.

I will ask John next time I see him. It may also be useful to ask Chris Lehmann -- if there is an unknown amethyst locality in the Inyo Co area, he would know.

It is a really nice specimen, and well worth trying to pinpoint the exact locality.

I was able to find and contact Kevin Anderson, who had a display of Amethyst from the Inyo Mountains of California, collected by Michael and Cora Anderson, that were displayed at the SFGMS Show, Aug. of 2008. These looked very similar to the one posted by Mike from Kearsarge. I got a response today that they were from Crystal Ridge, northeast of Independence.

So I guess the Kearsarge reference was to the town, and the locality may be:

Crystal Ridge, Johnson Spring, Tibbetts District, Inyo Mts (Inyo Range), Inyo Co., California, USA.

I am still trying to confirm that amethyst comes from there.

Jordi -- perhaps you could take this discussion out of Mike's collection thread, and make a new topic, so it stays together, and makes updating of info easier?

Thanks Tobi.

Thanks Bob for following up on the locality for the amethyst.

I'll wait the confirmation to change the current assigned locality

Mr. Anderson is positive his parents personally collected amethysts from Crystal Ridge, and that they are quite uncommon, so I would suggest going with:

Crystal Ridge, near Kearsarge, Tibbetts District, Inyo Mts., Inyo Co., California, USA.
