PostPosted: Aug 26, 2016 12:25    Post subject: Favourite Rhodochrosites?

What are your favourite localities for RHODOCHROSITE? My favourites are:

- Sweet Home Mine (Home Sweet Home Mine), Mount Bross, Alma District, Park Co., Colorado, USA (I hope one day to own a nice specimen from that mine, to me the rhodos from Sweet Home Mine are the most beautiful minerals on this planet)
- Uchucchacua Mine, Oyon Province, Lima Department, Peru
- N'Chwaning Mines, Kuruman, Kalahari manganese field, Northern Cape Province, South Africa
- Bockenrod, Reichelsheim, Odenwald, Hesse, Germany (not many of you may know that locality in southern Hesse, but I simply love the botryoidal material from there, just look at the attached photos)

Feel free not only to discuss your favourite localities but also which forms and colours of that mineral you like the most, e.g. rhombohedrons or scalenohedrons or botryoidal forms, red or pink colour etc. ...

I think the only one I have in my collection is from Crested Butte, CO. Not a well known locality! So I cannot really give a view.

Agreed with Fiebre Verde! I like those from Wolf Mine (and I own one or two), I suppose that because are rare to be found and aesthetically nice. Those from Uchuqchacua look generally very nice, as the ones from Alma and those from USA in general. But those from N'Chawning Mine are very nice and extremely pricey...

All in all, I like all them (maybe except those from China....Not so nice too my eyes, and some, heavily man touched.....)...
I always have room for a new Rhodo (and if from a still not had locale, better!)

With best wishes

Lluís

You should visit the Mineralogical Museum of Marburg, they have several superb specimens :-)

That's my problem with the ones from Sweet Home Mine, the prices are insane :-(

PostPosted: Aug 27, 2016 05:04    Post subject: Re: Favourite Rhodochrosites?

Rhodochrosite is also my favorite mineral.
My Mindat page: https://www.mindat.org/user-11954.html

I agree with the observation that - in general - the most beautiful crystals of Rhodochrosite are from Sweet Home Mine - Colorado and from N'Chwaning mines, Kalahari manganese field, South Africa. From this last locality I was fortunate to collect the 10 different Rhodochrosite habits described by W. Wilson and P. Dunn (Min Record May-June 1978.).

However there are exceptions from other places (usually not so valued) with world-class specimens.
As is the case of this Rhodochrosite from Gabon - Moanda Mine ( https://www.mindat.org/photo-183281.html ) with a Total Size: 13 x 10 x 5.5 cm. It is an outstanding piece. The color is beautiful and it is very lustrous and sparkly. This specimen attracted quite a lot of attention at the 2008 St Marie show, and I think it is the best Gabon Rhodo that has been viewed for more than 30 years now! This one is now a world class and particularly good, not only for the coverage of crystals, but because the color is so dark, red and rich. Normally they are paler or brown.

Cheers

Vasco Trancoso

Hi Vasco, a wonderful fine specimen from a locality I've never heard of, it reminds me of the superb South African specimens. Thanks for that contribution!
