This year, at the East Coast Show, I had the pleasure to view work by a local glass artist, mineral collector and friend, Jeremy Sinkus. Although this is mineral related in as much as the glass is a borosilcate, these are man made pieces. I found them fascinating and useful. Artisan made tourmaline shaped shot glasses and wine glasses adorned with "tourmaline" slices being the most useful. I have several. Hope you find this interesting. Please excuse the image quality.

Man made. Doped to react to UV light, so as not to be confused with the real thing. |

Shot glass, is my only answer. Be a shame to grind out gem tourmaline for shot glasses. Unless it was a particularly good single malt, single cask.

A bit more information on Jeremy in the Susan Robinson feature on mineral art and artists in Rocks & Minerals, Nov/Dec 2017 issue. Susan's profiles are always interesting, as are Jeremy's creations.

Jeremy has been busy mining his glass works for crystals, man made that is. Not to be confused with real thing, it is borosilicate glass, instead of (Na,Ca)(Mg,Li,Al,Fe2+,Fe3+)3(Al,Mg)6(BO3)3Si6O18(OH,O,F)4.

All very interesting.
Hope he continually makes it very clear that his creations, including the last photo of the "tourmalines" are all man created artworks. Remember "there is a sucker born every minute". BOB

Just being bad, I humbly remember that artificial rubies (that are said are indistinguishable from natural ones...) are done by a labo in USA. Emeralds, Chattan and Gilson are as old as I, Turquoise and opal from Russia are very convincing. Quartz, well, undoubtedly number one...and so many.....
If rightly labeled, no trouble.çIf passed as naturals... Well.... :-(
As the case for the sunstones that are as fake as a 3,5 ptas. coin....
Or some heliodors (yes, big noise here....)
As....
Oh, Lapis! Missing the reports on fake minerals... (and gems...)
With best wishes
Lluís

Agreed, Bob. He's never represented it to any sucker as anything but man made. His latest versions are now made from leaded glass and a 10x loupe will show air bubbles in the material, as we've explained so often in the slag identification section of the forum. Prior to this he would dope the borosilicate so it would be florescent. Thanks for the forum.
