These Spanish opals are strange. Where do they come from; did you find them or buy them?

Hi Pierre.

Nice to see you here.

All these opals are field-collected by me and my two kids in three different outings over the last seven years.

The outcrop is nowadays private property as you can see in the photos I add.

The opals digged in the high white cuts closer to the Camarillas Reservoir are surely bigger and better than these that we found. But is also more dangerous and we didn´t want any danger ;)

In the following Mindat link, you find a picture of a Menilite Opal we are talking about:

Pántano Camarillas, Agramón, Hellín, Albacete, Castile-La Mancha, Spain

They don´t have major value except the sentimental one when i see my kids, but i like to try pictures of these small but sculptural specimens with a dark background.

Best regards.

Quartz from Muzo, Boyacá Department, Colombia. (Nº-10).

Cluster of doubly terminated flat crystals with a prominent one. There are many rainbows and a white branch inclusion like a geyser just shooting straight up in the air. (Nº-10).

In the last three months in Colombia, I´ve strangely got many doubly terminated specimens from different localities: Muzo, some places in Santander Department and other localities from Antioquia Department.

Hi David.

Welcome to FMF.

If you want, you can tell us something about you in the link:

Presentation of new members - Reference Thread :

Casually i acquired few weeks ago an UV torch with black light 395 nm and these opals do not react to this UV light.

But this Aragonite from Toledo (Spain) turns to the yellow under the 395 nm UV light. The same porcupine specimen in a photo with LED light in:

Quartz from Neuquén, Patagonia, Argentina.

It´s a Quartz geode with Hematite inclusions purchased in Bogotá from a dealer who was born in Argentina.

FRANJUNGLE,

At the recent 2018 Denver Show several dealers had these. I bought two 10+ cm examples with calcites atop the quartz and one slightly smaller example without calcite. They are apparently from a relatively new find in a gypsum mining area in Patagonia Argentina in 2016/2017.

They appear to be hematite included quartz. While they are commonly called pink amethyst or red amethyst, that may be more of a marketing name than a proper term for them. I prefer to call them "hematite included red quartz". BOB

Hi Bob.

Nice to read you here again. I missed you, but i enjoyed the last picture with your two dogs in the Indiana snowy mountains. Thank you for this message.

I have other example with calcites on the quartzs as you comment.

My dear dealer from Bogotá didn´t say me the word hematite. We already know something more about these quartzs.

Best Regards.

Quartz from Bolivar, Vélez, Santander Department, Colombia. (Nº-28).

Cluster of doubly terminated elongated crystals. There are green points inclusions that seem to be Chlorite.

Some needles are attached in spray. A quartz star bringing the 2018 Christmas.

This specimen comes from a new Colombian locality in my collection, at the south of Santander Department.
