Claus Hedegaard †

The mineral community has lost one of its best. Claus Hedegaard passed away in his home in Aarhus, Danmark.

Claus was a knowledgeable natural scientist. As a biologist by profession he worked on Mediterranean moluscs. Just few years ago he had started his own business “Natureshop” in Aarhus with minerals, fossils and shells.

We have known Claus for years as one of the most serious and knowledgeable collector of minerals not only in northern Europe. Everyone knows his set phrase that black and ugly but rare sulfides and sulfosalts are by far the most interesting minerals.

Claus was a very good and prolific writer with a decidedly humorous style. We will miss his highly readable reports from the Munich, Tucson and Ste. Marie shows.

With the passing of Claus we have lost a very dear and close friend and a valuable member of our MINERALIEN-Welt team. We will incredibly miss him and would like to express our deepest sympathy with Sombat and his family.

Gerhard Niedermayr, Steffen Jahn, Olaf + Ulli Medenbach, Johann Zenz, Stefan Hamann, Rainer, Doris, Kristina und Mareike Bode.

Bye Claus, see you in the minerals paradise. There we will get a beer and we will discuss about some rare rock.
My best for you, wherever you are.

I met Claus once, and wrote to him on several occasions. He was a bright guy, and a nice guy. We shared a similar philosophy about the direction of mineral collecting, and the need to encourage the next generation of collectors/mineralogists. His voice will be greatly missed in the mineral community.

The world as a whole is poorer place without Claus...he touched so many aspects of it , it's hard to think of an area he did not love. He was truly a citizen of the world and probably had less regard for geographic and human boundaries than anyone I have ever met...there were no limits to what he would explore. I had more good times with him than I can remember...but I do remember that ALL times with him were good. He was an original...or as my mother would have said a "oner" ...no-one like him and not likely to be for a long time. As Jim Walker said, a LOT of glasses will be raised in his memory!

Claus was not only a friend, but also a qualified conaisseur, always interested for minor details and unusual shapes.
All rare mineral species will be a little bit more alone without him, and us too.

What a terrible loss. Claus was not only a very dear friend, but he was perhaps unique among those of us who consider ourselves mineral lovers in that his appreciation for minerals was universal, and his knowledge was encyclopedic. He clearly loved life, and he lived it to the fullest. His wit and his energy were exceptional, and his write-ups of mineral shows among the most fun to read.

So long my friend.

In a very welcome voice from beyond...the latest issue of Mineral News has Claus's review of this year's Tucson Show...filled with his trademark humor, disdain for perfection- driven collecting and a fascinating rant about his worldwide frustrations in getting a decent cup of tea. How sad to learn too late we had something more in common...minerals, beer, wine...tea!

Suerte Amigo!!!
