PostPosted: Feb 03, 2018 08:54    Post subject: Please help identify this stone / mineral

Greetings all and thank you so much for having me. I was recently walking a property in Lugoff SC where the landowner claims that the property is, in fact, an extinct volcanic vent. I found a quite a few volcanic type rocks but stumbled across the one in the photo. The specimen weighs about 5 pounds. The crystal chambers seem to run straight through the stone. I don't know what this is and I'm curious to know. Thank you all in advance for your help!

That's what I thought but what is the matrix? And how was it formed? Volcanic?

Looks as if it is probably quartzite. Try scratching it with a knife. If it doesn't scratch, then that is the most likely answer. Origin could either by as massive vein quartz (with the crystals growing into remnant vugs) or it might be a metamorphic quartzite...basically a quaertz sand altered by heatr and pressure such that it recrystallized as a very massive rock. Either way, it is not of volcanic origin.
