PostPosted: Mar 03, 2018 18:07    Post subject: Agate or something else?

Hello again, I want to also post this one that I found on the same shores as my previous post. Some are guessing it's an Agate, but I'm not sure...
Another question is, should I get someone to cut it in half?

This looks like it is probably an agate. Not a very high quality one, so I doubt that getting someone to cut it in half would yield surprise treasures. The cavity at the bottom of the first image appears to be lined with tiny quartz crystals, which is common with agates.

You can get some ideas about how to approach identifying minerals on your own from the topic Asking: "What is this? / Where is it from?", which you can find in the Index.

Oh ok!
Well, if it's not high quality, then it wouldn't hurt to peak inside, hehe!

Thank you so much for the info and advise.

Well, sure, if it's not expensive to do so, why not go for it?!!!

"Agate", by definition, is the banded variety of chalcedony, a microcrystalline variety of quartz. If there is any "banding" in your example, I suppose it can be considered a piece of an "agate". If there is no visible banding, the example can only be considered a piece of chalcedony. Whether there is or is no banding in your example is debatable. Personally, I see none so I would call your example nothing more than a piece of chalcedony. There are tiny druzy quartz crystals in the small cavities. BOB
