PostPosted: Apr 04, 2018 15:43    Post subject: Lenz Quarry Germany Specimens

I was trying to identify 2 specimens from Lenz Quarry in Germany. They were both found in what I think is clay sediments with iron stained veins running through. I followed the veins and came across both of these. They look like different minerals and my guess is the first one is quartz or calcite. The other I have no idea. I scratched both with a steel knife and left marks. My fingernail however, left no marks. Both crystals have a slick texture. Any help would be appreciated.

Based just on your photos, both examples look like broken crystals and cleavage portions of Calcite

Hi Jessie! An advice: try to drop some chloridric acid on the crystals. If it fizzes, it's calcite. If not, it's quartz. It's easy!

The first one is calcite for sure. The second one could be calcite too, but also barite.

Hi to everybody! If it's baryte, you should feel it heavy on your hand, and it doesn't fizz to chloridric acid.
I often come to Germany and visit mines and quarries. I studied in Idar-Oberstein!
