Finally some pictures of the odd twinned calcite (size 25 mm) inside the vug.
(See previous page of this thread for overall pictures and general information about this specimen).

Thank you, Andreas!

This time i want to add a picture of the specimen label. It was made by the previous owner (and miner) of the specimen, Ingo Löffler. The label looks old at first sight, but is computer-made. Nevertheless i think it is a good example for a label which looks nostalgic and reminiscent of the beautiful old labels that mineral collectors used to write in the past.

The label says: Calcit, Stbr. (Steinbruch) "Calcit" Holzen, Sauerland, NRW, Deutschland.
(Calcite, "Calcite quarry" Holzen, Sauerland, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany.)

Measures 65 x 55 mm.

A better picture of a specimen that i posted before: Conichalcite from Gold Hill, Tooele County, Utah, USA. Size of the specimen is 120 x 90 x 80 mm. The detailed picture of the bright green conichalcite has a 30 mm field of view.

I will continue the mission "better pictures of already posted specimens" with that combination of a gemmy 25 mm aquamarine crystal grown on a 20 mm smoky quartz. From Erongo Mountains, Namibia. Overall size 40 x 25 x 20 mm.

A quartz specimen with a great transparency... And I guess the Erongo aquamarine must be better in person. Could you try with another light source and a different background?

Maybe i'll try later, but at the moment the aqua doesn't like me and the DigiCam ;-) So first some other specimens. This is a light green apophyllite from Pune, Maharashtra, India. Longest crystal 35 mm, overall size 60 x 55 x 40 mm.

A large specimen of halite from a locality in eastern Hesse, not far away from my hometown Marburg: Neuhof-Ellers Potash Works near Fulda, exactly in the geographical center of Germany ( www.mindat.org/loc-36277.html ).

The specimen has a size of 200 x 80 x 60 mm, the longest halite cubes measure 12 mm.

Two other fluorite specimens:

The first one comes from Berbes, Asturias, Spain. Overall size 105 x 70 x 75 mm, largest crystal 15 mm.

The second one is from Elmwood Mine, Tennessee/USA and features two large and many very small of the typical fluorites for that locality, grown on the characteristic matrix of crystallized sphalerite. Overall size 100 x 65 x 55 mm, largest crystal nearly 20 mm.

PostPosted: Oct 30, 2010 13:56    Post subject: Re: Collection of Tobias Martin

Inspired by many beautiful mineral labels i've seen, i decided to make my own "classic" labels for the display collection. The recent acquisitions, e.g. the Namibian specimen above, are the first to get one of the new "old" labels. I attached it as a sample, (it says: Mineral Collection of Tobias Martin. Tourmaline (Schorl) on Feldspar. Erongo Mountains, Erongo, Namibia). I printed those labels on marbled paper, the size of each one is 50 x 25 mm. What do you think - is it a good look for such a nostalgic mineral label?

Tourmaline (elbaite var. indicolite) on quartz.

From the so-called "Pieters Mine", a small mine in a pegmatite field near Usakos, Erongo region, Namibia.

The specimen measures 140 x 90 x 40 mm and features a large, terminated tourmaline crystal with a size of 90 x 17 mm + some smaller crystals.

This is a remarkable specimen from Erongo. We are used to see splendid schorls from there but not well shaped colored elbaites. This one shows well defined edges, and is on matrix, which is rather rare in that locality. Just search Mindat database for 'elbaite' and 'Usakos' to see.
