PostPosted: Jun 10, 2018 01:25    Post subject: Hairlike Gold inclusions in Quartz??

Probably the rarest inclusions in Quartz I've ever seen.
Judging by the inclusions's shape and color, I can rule out the possibility of Rutile or goethite.
Could they really be Gold?

Guessing you bought this. As others will re-iterate from the forum rules, lapidary (polished) pieces are not suited or welcome here. Any metal detector will answer the question for you. My guess is this is a man made specimen anyway.

This could be rutile, most likely fom Bahia/Brazil (Novo Horizonte or Ibitiara) ...

Actually what we are discussing here are the inclusions, whether or not the quartz is polished is irrelevant. But if the site admins think this post is inappropriate, please delete it. I checked this specimen with a polariscope and confirmed it's natural quartz. Maybe I'll find a metal detector to test it, thank you.

While gold inclusions in quartz are known [and very rare], I have never seen any that are filamentous - gold filaments are rare anyplace. I think it is some other gold-colored mineral - of which there are several that often form filamentous fibers.

I examined a lot of quartz specimens with rutile inclusions .But rutile inclusions in quartz are always straight, they do not form a curved shape like the inclusions in this specimen.

Thank you and agree with you. Actually I just want to find out what it is, gold or not doesn't matter, because I've never seen anything like this before.

KISS principle says this is almost certainly rutile in quartz, which is incredibly abundant. Rutile in quartz is not always straight. Elongate gold in crystalline quartz is extremely rare.

Generally if there is any doubt about something being gold...it isn't.

I doubt you will have much luck with a metal detector

There is a simple trick to try first. While looking at the goldish stuff through a lens or microscope, move it from strong illumination into the shade (or turn off illumination) ...gold will still look like gold, but virtually all other goldish things will change.

Thank you very much.
I tried the trick, the unknown inclusions did not change color under different lightings, but the rutile did.
It may not be gold, but it is certainly unlike any rutile that I have ever seen.

Did you think about millerite?

The specimen also contains some shapeless goldish inclusions which I've never seen in any quartz with rutile inclusions before.
Another reason why I think it is not rutile is that if the rutile is thin enough it will be translucent, but the unknown inclusions are always opaque.

I didn't ,maybe because the color doesn't match.

How about marcasite? The filaments I've seen were rigorously straight with a diamond shaped cross-section.

The dealer who sold me this specimen had four stones with goldish inclusions, but only this one had hair-like inclusions, the others had only shapeless inclusions.

Like this one? The color looks right.

Very unusual specimen! Can the seller not tell you where the specimen comes from?

I asked the seller and she told me it is from Brazil. She also told me that she had another specimen with this type of inclusions(currently in the process of polishing).
I'll try to get that specimen and do some more testing.

New specimens have arrived. This time I got 5 pieces, but only two of them have some hair-like inclusions.
Most of the shapeless inclusions are inside the fissures within the quartz, some of them are curled(seem quite like metal to me).
