PostPosted: Sep 21, 2018 06:19    Post subject: Fluorite UK

This is another specimen which I have; I purchased it with the following information:
Fluorite UK.

My question is; does anybody have a clue where it might be found?

The specimen is 15 * 15 cm. Fluorite cubes are transparent, and small, 1-8 mm.

Suggestions are welcome

Thanks
Mathias

Hi Mathias,

This has the appearance of perhaps being from one of the mines around Matlock Bath, Derbyshire. Probably difficult to pin it down to an individual mine - Wapping, Royal, Tear Breeches & other mines all produced similar material on a friable brown dolostone host rock.

It looks like there is some calcite or aragonite on the back of the specimen too (both occur in the area as grey or white coatings on other minerals).

Hope this helps.

There are several localities where this fluorite could be from ... my first thought was Hilton Mine which did not only produce the famous yellow fluorites but also paler ones like that ...

I think we need Jesse Fisher here!!! :-)

I would agree with Andy, looks like Derbyshire to me, though I don't know that area as well as the North.

I too concur that Derbyshire is more likely than Weardale. I collected a lot of colourless fluorite looking like this in the early seventies from the Dirtlow Rake area just south of Castleton.

It could also be from the Yorkshire Pennines. Colourless, untwinned fluorite like this is common from Arkengarthdale down to Grassington Moor.
