If it is calcite, it will dissolve or 'fizz' if you put some acid on some part of it. Strong vinegar, if you don't have any stronger acids will do, But HCl would be the best test. Just drop a few drops on a sample or a piece of the sample in dilute HCl or other acid. A hardness test [you can find the information on this forum at the beginning of this thread. While it looks as if it might be calcite, there are other things it could be from looking at it. You must do the tests requested when you first post a question of what is this....

With all due respect to Peter Lemkin I don't think it is appropriate or necessary to "Drop a few drops" of dilute HCl. It could splash and spoil...! Just touching a drop (not yet large enough to fall) onto the surface of the mineral is sufficient, surely?

Thanks gentlemen, i will try testing with HCl on another little piece of this stone and I will tell you what happens. What I know for sure is....limestone was around this stone.

So. I was trying the method with HCl and many bubbles formed when i put a drop to the clear crystal of calcite. So thanks for giving me a method to test it

This looks very much like quartz to me. I don't see the perfect cleavage that calcite has. Since it is surrounded by limestone (according to what you have said), small amounts of limestone adhering to the test area may have produced the bubble.

I would urge you to test the hardness, which is very different between calcite and quartz. I would also suggest putting a small piece of the mineral in a small container with abundant acid - if it is calcite it will dissolve completely, as long as there is enough acid. If it is quartz it will stop bubbling rather quickly (if it bubbles at all) and will remain undissolved as long as you want to observe it.

Incidentally, the matrix appears from the one photograh to be oolitic limestone, an interesting and somewhat uncommon rock in its own right.

Pete Richards : Nice Saturday,
thank you for your opinion, I really appreciate the help of the local community. I'm going to test the immersion in HCl. I have other pieces of this stone, and on some is limestone an inseparable part, sometimes frayed between the crystals. The crystals have a mica gloss, and the stone would be broken with pliers and vice. They do not crawl, but the larger boards break. Maybe I still have a HCl test today and I will say ...

Please help us understand what you mean by this statement:

1. After the bubbles stopped the mineral fragment was gone.

2. It bubbled for awhile, then stopped, and the mineral fragment was as big as at the beginning.

3. It bubbled for awhile, then stopped, and the mineral fragment was smaller than at the beginning.

If the answer is 1, then the mineral was calcite.

If the answer is 2, then the mineral was quartz or something other than calcite. As an extra test, you can add a chip of known calcite or limestone and the bubbling should begin again.

If the answer is 3, then probably the mineral was calcite and the acid got used up. To be sure, add a little more acid and watch for new bubbles.

The answer is number 3 and after adding more drops of acid, answer number 1. Minerals completely disappeared. So it's calcite. Thank you very much and wish nice rest of Saturday

Nice monday,
I was making a video about testing calcite, if somebody interested you can see it here

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bif5GG9y0YU

Maybe it can help to someone.... Only in the video is nitric acid used instead of hydrochloric acid
