PostPosted: Jan 17, 2019 20:11    Post subject: Calcite or Quartz stalactite?

Hello everyone,

I'm a novice collector trying to teach myself more about minerals. i recently acquired this specimen from a seller who told me it was calcite stalactite (unsure of locality, i'm waiting to hear back from the seller). however, i've seen numerous pictures online of very similar looking clusters that are being sold as quartz stalactite, with a few exhibiting iris quartz behavior.

The first picture is of the calcite stalactite i purchased. the second and third are pictures of similar looking crystal clusters being sold online as quartz stalactite. i only found one listing for "calcite stalactite" online that looks similar to what i have, which is shown in the last picture. i've named the sellers in order to give the photos appropriate credit.

What are the discernible differences between the quartz and calcite crystal formations specifically regarding the examples i've included, if there are any differences between them all? is my new piece actually calcite or was it misnamed?
Thank you :)

Druzy QUARTZ! Certainly NOT Calcite.

The crystal form and hardness of Quartz is much different than Calcite. Your example , just by it's looks, is certainly Quartz.

Also, the photo may or may not be of a stalactite, but probably not. The photo doesn't allow me to see the specimen in its whole surrounding context.

All of your pix are of druzy Quartz. The second and third photos are of examples almost certainly from Morocco. I suspect your example is also from Morocco BOB

thanks bob! i suspected that it was quartz as well, which is why i took the time to do some research online and find pictures to compare.

It could also be from India, as there is a lot of that type of material around from Jalgaon and Mumbai.
