PostPosted: Feb 17, 2019 14:35    Post subject: Agates from Argentina.

In the world of microcrystalline quartz, Argentina has provided a very important contribution to the agate world. It may be one of the countries with the largest variety of colorful agate deposits available in commercial quantities.
So far there are 8 known agate deposits in Argentina which are all known in the market under commercial names. Dividing the country by regions, then provinces will make it easier to understand where the specific agates and their deposits are found. The following shows us the breakdown:

NORTHEAST REGION:

AGATE NAME DEPOSIT LOCATION
Black River Agate Entre Rios Province
Cuatia Agate Corrientes Province

MID-WEST REGION:

AGATE NAME DEPOSIT LOCATION
Condor Agate Mendoza Province
Puma Agate Mendoza Province

SOUTHWEST REGION

AGATE NAME DEPOSIT LOCATION
Patagonian Agate Chubut Province
Crater Agate Chubut Province
Ghost Agate Santa Cruz Province
Snow Agate Santa Cruz Province

Each of this agates has their unique features, which will be described in detail with sample pictures attached in the following chapters.

PostPosted: Feb 18, 2019 20:53    Post subject: Agates from Argentina. NORTHEAST REGION : Black River agate.

There are two agate deposits in the NORTHEAST REGION of Argentina.
Black River agate and Cuatia agate.

First we will describe Black River agate.

BLACK RIVER agate is a water worn agate and is found in gravel pits together with concretions, jaspers, and petrified wood pieces.
BLACK RIVER AGATE has contrasting banding of white, grey, beige, blue, and pink colors with a very low percentage of fracture specimens.
Black River agate deposit originated in Southern Brazil, the material was dragged down south by water when Brazil was pulled out from under the ocean and deposited in what is called today Entre Rios Province, in Argentina.
Black River agate age is the same as the Brazilian agate - Permian.
Black River agate was found, named, and introduced in the market in 1998 by Luis de los Santos.

CUATIA AGATE is an almond shaped agate found buried in decomposed rhyolite in the Northwest Province of Corrientes, Argentina.

Cuatia agate has beautiful fortification patterns, usually in perfect blend with Uruguayan lines. The colors range from pink, brown, blue, white, and red, with very rare fractured specimens. Also some specimens have interesting chromatography.
Sometimes Cuatia agate fluoresces bright white under short wave UV light.

Cuatia agate age is Tertiary.
Cuatia agate was found, named, and introduced in the market in 2015 by Luis de los Santos.

PostPosted: Feb 20, 2019 21:15    Post subject: Agates from Argentina. MID-WEST REGION

There are two agate deposits in the MID-WEST REGION of Argentina.
Condor agate and Puma agate

First we will describe Condor agate.

Condor agate is perhaps one of the most colorful agates in the market, the variety of colors and patterns are endless.
Some specimen shows inclusions like sagenite, plumes or moss.
Condor agate is found in several deposits of decompose rhyolite in the Hills of Valle Grande town, near San Rafael City, Mendoza Province, Argentina.
Usually the material is found in nodules, but one deposit yield only vein type.
A low percentage of the material is fluorescent in green color under UV light short wave.
Condor agate is mostly free of fractures due to its very young age, Tertiary, 30 million years old.
Condor agate was founded, named an introduced to the market in 1993 by Luis de los Santos

PostPosted: Feb 21, 2019 17:43    Post subject: Agates from Argentina. MID-WEST REGION : Puma agate

Puma agate is a sedimentary pseudomorph agate after coral.
This agate has a bright green fluorescence under short wave UV light.
The deposit extends for about 100 miles from Malargue city to the south of Mendoza Province, Argentina.
The usual colors of this agate are pastel blue, red, and yellow.
The age of this agate is the same as Condor agate: Tertiary, 30 million years old.
This agate was found, named and introduced to the market in 1995 by Luis de los Santos

PostPosted: Feb 23, 2019 17:34    Post subject: Agates from Argentina. SOUTHWEST REGION : Patagonian agate

Patagonian agate

Patagonian agate is found in different deposit about 20 to 30 kilometers east of Esquel City, in Chubut Province, Argentina.
This agate is form in nodules with soft skin, and is buried in the decompose host rock, which was Andesite.
The age of this agate is the same as Condor agate, Puma agate, Crater agate : Tertiary. (30 MYO.)
The cut nodules usually show a wide range of colors combinations always in pastel tones, with fortification banding and sometimes great chromatography.

PostPosted: Feb 23, 2019 18:15    Post subject: Agates from Argentina. SOUTHWEST REGION : Crater agate

Crater agate

Crater agate is found in a small deposit about 10 kilometers North-West of the little town named Las Plumas, in Chubut Province, Argentina.
The agate is form in nodules with very rough skin in black or dark brown color.
90% of the specimens shows a remarkable red botryoidal center, surrounded by smoked color chalcedony layer with different thickness.
The red botryoidal center is the remains of Hematite layer that over time oxidized and created a coating of jasper.
Under UV light short wave this agate is green color fluorescent.
The nodules are laying buried in the decompose host rock: Basalt.
The age of the Crater agate is Tertiary, (30 MYO)
This agate was found, named and introduce in 1997 to the market by Luis de los Santos.

Ghost agate

Ghost agate deposit is located 20 Kilometers north of Petrified Forest National Park in Santa Cruz Province, Argentina.
This agate is found loose on the ground or semi buried under decompose Andesite.
The nodules are round or almond shape with very distinctive fortification pattern in white color suspended in clear chalcedony.
Some special features inside this agate are moss, plume, tubes, and curtains pattern.
The agate age is Jurassic, (160 million years old)
Small percentage of nodules are fluorescent green color under UV light short wave.
