PostPosted: Apr 08, 2019 12:37    Post subject: Antimonite Hunan?

Dear mineral friends,

Last weekend I purchased a specimen labeled as follows: Antimonite on Quartz, Hunan, China. The specimen is about 8 cm left to right, and the black crystal measures approximately 6 cm.

I bought it from a befriended mineral collector who finally decided to stop, after 40 years of collecting and self-mining. He bought and mined his last specimens about 8 years ago. I'm gradually buying all his specimens so that he gets some reasonable money in return. This is one of those specimens.

But the specimen doesn't appear like Stibnite to me. It looks too dark (black), almost square shape, no luster. Looks a bit like graphite from the outside (I know it isn't graphite of course, but just to describe the appearance).

Does anybody recognize this kind of specimen?
If not, my next step will be XRF analysis.

Thanks,
Mathias

Here's another photo.

Thanks,
Mathias

Looks like Ferberite to me....also looks like some I have and have seen from Panasquera. A hardness and density test will immediately tell you much, and likely rule out Antimonite.

If Jordi says that then I agree. Could that be a cassiterite on the left?

Thanks a lot everyone; I'm now convinced that it is Ferberite on/in Quartz, Panasqueira.
Thanks again
Mathias
