This is exactly how I found it - only washed it. So heavy and very smooth. Brown around the edges but red in the middle. Odd find for sure please help. Thanks

My guess is that it is either a piece of "ironstone"...a very fine-grained sand- or siltstone cemented by iron oxides, or, possibly a siderite concretion.

It certainly has an intriguing weathering pattern...amazing how sculptural mother nature can get...

Thanks for the help man. Does this have any uniqueness or any value to it? Or should I just throw it away?

This looks to me like an altered siderite (iron carbonate) concretion. Is it softer than a knife blade? Does it leave a brown streak? Can you tell us anything about the geology of the area where you found it?

Agreed. Looks like an ironstone concretion to me, but could also be a weathered siderite nodule as well.

So should I add to my collection or throw it back out in the woods?

Where did you find it. Was it around clay soil? If so, it may be a concretion like an Indian paint pot. That fits with the softness.

Yes I guess it was kinda clay soil. But an Indian paint pot would be cool. If it wasn’t in 1000 pieces😂

Found it in London Kentucky in the woods. I was rockhounding in the creek. Ventured off into the woods. They was a lot of holes dug looked like the soldiers dugout to hide for protection. It was really cool

Completely unique, but zero (monetary) value :-)
