Hello, Don.

Thank you for your kind comment.
As you can see on the site just mentioned by Bob Morgan, the number of habits and shapes of pyrite is very high...
Warm greetings and take care.

Hello, Bob.

For me too is a pleasure to meet another pyrite crystallography enthusiast.
The Italian pyrites that you posted are very interesting.
I looked at your article on the Rochester Science web-site with great interest. Sincere congratulations.
I will send you an MP. Warm greetings from Tuscany.

In the next pyrite from Gavorrano there is an intruder... I hope you like it.

Best regards and stay safe.
Sante

Hello.

Niccioleta has been a glorious mine for its spectacular pyrites and gypsums.
Pyrite crystals sometimes exceeded the 20 cm and seldom have been found crystals of gypsum over one meter long.

Greetings from Tuscany.

Hello, Tobi.

Thank you again for your kind words.
I remember perfectly the evening when a miner, having finished his shift, showed up with me with this piece before he even went to his house for dinner. He probably needed money for his large family. I generously rewarded him, as I have always done with all the miners, not forgetting that my father-in-law was also one of them.

Here is a small but doubly rare piece: first because, unlike Niccioleta, very few samples of this element came out from Gavorrano (I know of only one other); secondly because the association with quartz is very unusual.
I hope you like it.

Warm greetings from Gavorrano.

Great story about how you got the selenite specimen. Directly from a miner who just finished his work, I think only self-collected could be better!

Thank you, Tobi.
I let you imagine how many stories can be accumulated in over fifty years of collecting.
And you are also on your way with your thirty years (if I'm not mistaken) of mineralogical passion.

Cinnabar was one of the the most exploited minerals in south Tuscany.

Warm greetings and take care.

Again a true museum piece, Sante, what an impressive cinnabar!

I think we all would appreciate some more of your stories from your 5 decades of collecting :-)
And yes, about 30 years now for me, I hope for a lot more to come ...

Stay safe and please continue this thread! I really enjoy your specimens and I learn a lot about Italian minerals besides the usual stuff like Sicilian sulphur, Elba pyrite or garnet from the north. Really fascinating AND educative, thanks :-)

Stibnite was another much exploited sulphide in Grosseto Province.
The most important mines, among many others, were:
- Manciano (Tafone mine, Montauto mine, San Martino sul Fiora mine);
- Capalbio (Torre Carige mine);

Here a sample from Pereta mine.

Hello. I hope you all are well.

The Tuscan mineral par exellence was pyrite.
Apart from Elba island, the most important mines, all in Grosseto province, were in this order:
- Gavorrano mine;
- Niccioleta mine;
- Boccheggiano mine.

Here a sample from Gavorrano.

Warm greetings. Take care.

Another killer specimen, very impressive! At first sight you would think Huanzala/Peru, but that it comes from that classic Italian mine makes that outstanding pyrite even more beautiful!

Hello.

This pyrite has a different style.
It is known that the triglyph striations in cubes indicate the dodecahedral nature of pyrite, and that of Gavorrano is characterizated by a strong tension between the two habits.
I hope you find it interesting.

Warm greetings.

This is a very interesting specimen, but I am not sure I understand your measurements.

The example is 202 millimeters long??? Exactly 202 mm, not 201 or 203; quite accurate for something so large!! Personally I prefer cm for something so long, but whatever.....

And exactly what is 5,6 millimeters (5.6 mm in US metrics)?? Are you actually measuring down to 0.1 mm at the width of the specimen's the widest point?? One tenth mm (0.1mm), really?

I guess, if I were to describe the specimen, I would say something short and simple like: Metastibnite 20 cm long. That description, or something like it, seems so much more practical.

But that is me. Thanks, Bob

Look at your measurements of this specimen; 265 mm x 150 mm, for an irregular specimen (!) over 26 cm. You have 5 people measure this example in mm and I will wager that no two measurements in mm will be exactly the same. The accuracy, or rather the exact lack of accuracy seems rather ridiculous, but that is just me. BOB

Hello, Bob. I hope you are fine.

I'm glad to hear you.
I agree with you that it is often more appropriate, as well as convenient, to measure in cm.
If I chose the measurement in mm from the beginnings it was:
- to adapt, with the fervor of the novice, to the rules of the Forum which recommend at least two accurate measurements in cm or in mm;
- to give a more accurate idea of the first minerals that I had to post, which were very small (the first just 7 mm).
The habit and consistency with the adopted method did the rest...
As for the accuracy of the measurement, I always use an electronic caliper, which also indicates the tenths of a millimeter.
Exaggerated? Maybe. But, as you say, this is me.
Thanks to your useful suggestion, from now on I will use mm for thumb-nails and miniatures and cm for cabinets and larger specimens.
Receive my sincere and warm greetings and take care.
Sante

Hello.

One of the best specimens from Niccioleta mine with the rare association of pyrite and sulphur.
Does anyone know of other localities? China, for example, is so surprising... I'd like to know.

Warm greetings.
Sante
