PostPosted: Oct 28, 2019 06:25    Post subject: New Free Mineral Database App for your phone

I was talking to Jordi about this idea at Munich Show in 2018, and now it is finally completed he has kindly agreed to let me share this with users of the FMF.

The app is a simple to use and gives an up to date description of some 6200 mineral species, when downloaded to your Apple or Android device.

Once installed it, works offline and gives you instant access to tons of mineral information; see the attached photo.

If you would like to see more/download the app search for "e-rocks mineral database" in either Apple App Store or Google Play.

Please feel free to contact me if you need any more information.

As I say above the App is free to download and use, we developed it to organise and research our own data and thought it might be useful for fellow mineral people who need this type of information.

Hope you enjoy!

Something I'd like to see in this is better location granularity for browsing and searching from global down. Currently its a big crowded text field and hard to use if looking for a region or state etc. May be the source information doesn't allow that to be captured but maps can help people know if your listed town is in the area they want to know about or not. maybe turning location into gps co-ords and linked to mapping data (google, openmaps etc) would mke it far more useful in this regard.

Also a more advanced search where known information can be entered to help narrow down search results to help with identification. eg knowing the approx hardness, streak and specific gravity etc be able to enter anything known about a sample and have returned possible matches. maybe part of a tool is the app to help narrow down identification, it could ask further questions for the user to answer to help them narrow things down. it would work well with an inventory tool if you were considering such a thing. I'm sure I'm not the only collector with currently unknown specimens but may have tools and knowledge to gain data on those specimens in the near future. or maybe I'm part of the few with patience to get to a correct answer instead of jumping the the most valuable conclusion and trying to make my specimen fit :)

Thanks for your input,

Of course we can create a location filter - eg show only minerals reported within a country or GPS range, we can also create filters on any characteristic/combination.

I would say these are functions of something more sophisticated and more difficult to engineer (performance and UI) in a free App.

Our objective for this first release is to have something that you can take to a mineral show, museum or stock room and be able to fast look up information on a given species etc, and not be reliant on the internet connection etc.

Again I appreciate the feedback

Yes - Google Play is where you will find the download.

For your information we added an upgrade that helps with the searching (in Android version)

Hi All,

For people who use or would like to use our Mineral Database App:-

We have just released an updated version - with IMA data correct up to 6 November 2020.

Both IOS and Android versions on App Store/Google Play respectively - search e-Rocks Mineral Database.

It is FREE, quick, comprehensive and works offline

Regards
