A curious piece: the attached "jackstraw" of malachite ps azurite" carries a Bob Jenkins label that states "Mibladen, Morocco" - yet when I check mindat, it shows no malachite reported from there. Any ideas where this one might be from?

Hello, Linus.

I've some very similar specimens labelled as from Touissit, though also Kerrouchene could be a possible candidate.
Last word to Jordi, one of biggest experts also on Moroccan minerals.

Regards.

For sure not Mibladen. Most probably Kerrouchen (good job Sante ;-) although is some possibility also for Tadamout.

Linus, your piece looks like some of these two?

It may just be my computer screen, but are we sure that this is malachite after azurite? I'm getting a bluish hue, as if it's chrysocolla.

No matter where it's from it's a very aesthetic specimen!

Hi, Kevin.

Your suspicion is understandable and it is true that sometimes we find surprises where we least expect them. But these malachites, with their typical color, have been on the market for decades and are immediately recognizable. It would be strange that, to date, nobody had found out that they were something else.
In Morocco chrysocolla, although quite present, is far less common than malachite.

My warmest greetings.
Sante

Hi Jordi, thanks for you input. This piece looks a bit more like the second picture you posted. The piece has a greenish "wash" to it that is suggestive of copper, but reminds me more of the chrome-rich petrified wood from northern Arizona. Nevertheless, at broken attachment points I do see areas of fibrous crystals that strongly resemble malachite. I have inspected the piece carefully and there are present only very rare tiny specks of azurite. The stacked flat crystal sheets that make up the piece, if taken in discrete packets, do resemble azurite forms (see attached pic). Perhaps I'll bring the piece by when you're in tucson.

Looking your last photo: https://www.mineral-forum.com/message-board/download.php?id=95840 I'm more tempted by Tadamout.

As usual it could happen that just by a photo it becomes impossible to be sure especially when it is a non-easy case as this one. If you want you can deliver the piece to some dealer you know at the Inn Suites-HTCC and during my stay in Tucson I can take a look on it.
Maybe viewing the piece personally I could help...
