PostPosted: Mar 25, 2020 10:23    Post subject: Peruvian Fluorite: Huayllapon vs. Mundo Nuevo

Hi all,

I was researching and cataloging a Fluorite specimen I recently acquired (photo’s see attach).

The specimen was labelled as “Mundo Nuevo mine” in Peru. I knew the mine from the find in 2010 with the Pink masses of Fluorite with Quartz and Hübnerite. I even saw a piece of green octahedral Fluorite on Quartz at our local fair attributed to the same find/mine. For me it was a done deal and the locality correct.

However I was browsing mindat.org and I noticed very similar specimens being attributed to Huayllapon.
I always knew Huayllapon from the large Quartz needles with partially embedded Green Fluorites near the tips. Most of the specimens I know were stepped cubes (hexahedron dominant) with octahedral modifications, while some specimens on Mindat.org (and the one I have) are octahedrons (dominant) with cubic modifications. The cube modifications are very sharp & gemmy, while the octahedral faces seem more stepped/etched/...

It seems there is an overlap of habits between the two localities, while (as far as I can see on mindat) there is quite some distance between them. What could be the reason behind this? Wrongly attributed specimens? Is there a way to tell similar specimens from both localities apart?

Thank you for any insights!

Philip

This is almost certainly from Mundo Nuevo - i have a piece almost just like it. These came out around 2010.

Hi Matt,

Thanks for the quick reply!
Other than the specimen in your collection, do you have any other references?
In my opinion and the more I look around on the internet, many of the specimens attributed to Huayllapon, could also be Mundo Nuevo and vice versa. Makes it a bit confusing ;-)

I got mine from Luis Burillo, and he had a bunch of this material back in 2010. I expect that he got the locality correct and thus the correct locality is Mundo Nuevo. That's all I know.
