PostPosted: Nov 02, 2023 13:28    Post subject: Locality for sphalerite and white mineral

Here is an old specimen, probably 19th century, of sphalerite and a white mineral. There are two specimens in the collection with catalog number 2260, reportedly from Joplin, Missouri. However, the two specimens look very different, so I somewhat distrust the locality attribution.

This specimen features dark brown sphalerite with incomplete balls of a white, elongated mineral that I am assuming is barite. The white mineral began growing after some sphalerite was already deposited on the brownish matrix (weathered limestone?)

Can anyone offer a definite attribution of a locality? Can anyone verify the identity of the white ball-forming mineral?

Dan, one of the foremost experts in Missouri minerals, assist us:

Sure looks like barite/sphalerite from somewhere here in the middle U.S. It could be from Missouri, though normally one doesn’t see sphalerite like that with the barite, only galena. But I suppose that it is possible. Looks like a really old specimen and could have come from most any small surficial deposit. There are/were a lot of them throughout the state.
