The 2021 John S. White Mineral Legacy Award

Robert B. Cook, after whom Bobcookite was named, was the recipient of the international John S. White Mineral Legacy Award, which recognizes people who have striven to educate, inform, and create paths to enhance knowledge of minerals. Dr. Cook taught at Auburn University for thirty-five years, twenty-two of which he was head of its Department of Geology and later the Department of Geology and Geography. His areas of specialization included optical mineralogy, geochemistry, and mineral exploration. During his career he conducted exploration programs as a consultant in a variety of foreign countries, including Bolivia, Chile, and China, and essentially all western states. He has also acted as consultant for the U.S. Department of Defense, NASA, the United Nations, and the U.S. Department of Justice. At the time of his retirement in 2007, the university established an endowed chair in his name. He continues to practice geology as a consultant.

His publication record includes over two hundred papers and articles as well as two monographs devoted to state mineralogy, a U.S. Geological Survey Professional Paper, and a variety of state geological survey bulletins. He has been an executive editor of Rocks & Minerals for more than twenty-five years, during which time he authored more than 120 articles devoted to collector and geographic mineralogy. (See his article “Gold-Associated Minerals from the Collector’s Perspective” in the issue 3, Volume 96, May/June 2021, pages 200-236)

Cook's keen sense of humor has helped promote life-long friendships in the scientific and collector community and has led to his ability to generate enthusiasm and continued interest in his students. His ability to set high educational standards is reflected in the professional achievements of many students and their continued personal and professional interaction with him long after moving down the path of their careers.
