This has all the earmarks of actually being from the Viburnum Trend Mining District not the Tri-State District. These are often confused with each other since at least part of each district is in the State of Missouri, USA. They are both Mississippi Valley Type deposits but there are characteristic differences.

They are located about 200 miles apart. The Tri-State District encompasses parts of three states: Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri (hence the name) and is on the SW corner of Missouri. The Viburnum Trend is in Eastern Missouri. The Tri-State was zinc rich and had much more and larger sphalerite crystals. The matrix is characteristically Chert or a light gray limestone. The Viburnum Trend was more Lead rich and on a dolostone host. The easiest detection is the Viburnum trend has small whitish rhombs of dolomite somewhere on most specimens. The dolomite from the Tri-State tends to be much larger saddle shaped tan to pink crystals.

I wrote an article showing a comparison of the districts for my webpage but alas it was lost in my divorce.

Thank you, it was purchased at a rock show and was tagged that way.

I see many of these mislabeled by people who think the districts are one and the same. I am fairly certain its from the Viburnum Trend. I little better picture of the other sides would verify.

This is very interesting. I have a large specimen of galena, sphalerite, chalcopyrite and dolomite that was labeled Eagle Picher Mine, Ottawa County, OK. This is in the Tri-State area. The dolomite appears very white and rhomb-like. However, the sphalerite crystals are large. Could this be the wrong location?

John,

Your specimen is clearly form the Tri-State-District so there is no reason to doubt about the mine.

Best regards,

Felix

Agreed, there is no doubt this is a Tri-State piece. Notice the rhombs of dolomite have a typical curvature often called saddle-shaped. Those Sphalerite crystals are much larger than anything from Viburnum Trend.

If I get time I will post a typical dolomite from Viburnum Trend.
