've never seen this kind of matrix before and there are several deep red crystals. At first I was thinking garnet but the matrix doesn't seem to fit that either. The closest thing I could find visually for a similar matrix was painite...but I seriously doubt that lol.

I can dig out my camera if better shots are needed.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Can you give us any information about its hardness? Locality? Is the last photo just a strong light, or is it a LWUV (it looks like it might be a Convoy)? If not, does it fluoresce?

Sorry, sometimes I get a bit ahead of myself lol.

Here's the skinny so far...

I gave it a bath in HCl to ensure the colours were 'honest'. It scrapes clean with no real damage to the crystal (so 7 or better Mohs?). I've only got a SWUV (sussing out a LW tomorrow) which shows no glow (which is still pretty inconclusive lol).

The light in the pic is just a small LED that I put a rubber filter with a hole to try to show the colours of the crystals.

As for the locality...I found this on the northern shores of Lake Erie so it's origns could be anywhere between here and Greenland due to the last glaciers. The spot I go to in particular is at the foot of a 150' clay cliff (glacial drop off point) which has a pretty diverse offering depending on the day lol. Even found a 10" rounded ball of soap stone from the Arctic the cliff spit out onto the beach one morning as if it came from the sky lol

So I was mixed up about the UVA and UVC lol, but I got a dual SWLW light and neither the matrix or crystals irridesce.
