Greetings Internet forum users. Our attention is the most valuable commodity there is (in my opinion), thanks in advance for sharing yours with me.
I recently got these two pieces from a customer, they were used in landscaping.
I haven't been able to find pictures of anything like them.
I don't know much about geology but I work with the ground and have a pretty nice rock collection even including other obsidian but I have never seen anything like either of these.
The small one weighs about 20 lbs and the big one is over 50
The one I call "root beer' color lets some light through the brown and
so does the red one.
The red one has orange streaks and a few purple "flakes" here and there and some crystal formation on it too.
Both are glass-like, the big one is about 13" X 9".
I'd really like to know where they come from, I don't think they came from the same place and I didn't get any useful info from the guy I got them from.
I plan on displaying them indoors, I like rocks.

These are probably glass slag.

As in artificial? I wondered that because of the color. The red one has some crystal stuff on it.
looks like you could make some arrowheads with it either way in a pinch.

Many USA glass factories would dispose of the left over glass in the furnaces when they changed colors or closed up shop, or had to repair a cracked furnace. I have seen especially Fenton glass slag/left over glass for sale at rock shops.

Waste glass for sure, not even stabilised, would not be able to make arrowheads by knapping.

Thanks, that's got to be what it is, I looked up slag glass and it checks out, it's even got bubbles in the red one, I learned that another piece that I have is slag glass too and not obsidian, it's just black/dark brown and baseball sized but has bubbles.
I will stick around here and learn more about rocks for sure and maybe even post something else.
