PostPosted: Mar 15, 2022 20:03    Post subject: Petrified Wood info

Hello all!
I used to work at a Rock and Gem shop that unfortunately closed it’s doors this past February. I am friends with the owners and know all the history and ins and outs. They had purchased a shipping container at one point that had a lot of very old crystal and mineral specimens from a very old collection. A lot of the minerals are Canadian, a lot are labelled however, a lot are not. Some are easy to recognize and identify but there are a lot that we have tried to research with unsuccessful results. I’m pretty good with identification of most crystals and minerals however, these ones I’m having trouble with as they have no location attached to them. I tend to be drawn towards the unique looking specimens. I love the odd shaped, odd coloured, irregular appearance :)

Any help is greatly appreciated!

SPECIMEN 1: Petrified Wood
So this piece, I initially thought it was chromium wood however, I was told that is usually more of an apple green. It is over 25lbs so my suspicions are more iron based. It presents similar to the Hampton Butte specimens I’ve looked up and read on and would explain the heavy concentration of iron. Unfortunately, this was one that did not have a location attached to it.

It might be best to try a fossil forum, we focus on crystalised minerals. 'Petrified wood' is about all I can add, but you already knew that

Yep! Tried there too haha. They figured maybe someone here would know. They gave me the name of some expert in petrified wood but I never heard back.
Thank you for the advice though :)
