PostPosted: Sep 14, 2022 09:28    Post subject: What is the location of this calcite?

I just bought this calcite without a location label.
It is associated with quartz crystals and, what looks to me like, corroded cubic pyrite crystals.
Could someone help me determine where it came from?
Thanks for your help.

Perhaps somewhere in the USA Midwest: Kansas or Missouri, even Tennessee.

This does not look like any Midwest USA calcite I can think of. I think the key to potentially finding the location relies on a few items;

Where was it purchased? (I see the original poster is from Brussels) This often helps narrow things down.
Was it from an old collection or a recent purchase from a wholesaler, and if so, where was the wholesaler from?

Could be from China, but that is not very helpful as I have no idea which mine

My first thought was the same as Carles', could be from Missouri. But there are many other options where this specimen could be from, it's a tough question. You have a combination of very common minerals so the chance of determining the locality will be slim. You guessed there's corroded pyrite on the specimen, to me it looks rather like chalcopyrite. Maybe you can make some closer shots of these smaller crystals? The chance will stay slim but maybe these crystal will give us a hint ...

Tobi
