Didn't know where to post this. I bought a specimen from a known prior collection. How do I properly acknowledge on my display label that the specimen is from this collection?

I see " Ex. collection owner" on some online specimens in this situation.

What exactly is "Ex." short for?

What is the best way to go?

Hi Frank,
"Ex" is a word, not an abbreviation (e.g., ex wife). It basically means "former" or "formerly".
Cheers
Tony

"EX" is Latin for "from" as in "EX LIBRIS"- "from the library".

Thanks to both of you for clearing this up for me.

I use 'Ex', as it is a word. Don't get me started on abreviations versus contractions!

There should not be a period after. Just a general observation - some people and some dealers put ex or Ex [name] for nearly every specimen they know who owned it before. In my own collection, I ONLY put that [even if I know it] if the person was quite famous in the mineral collecting world. That is my 'standard' - but it is of course for everyone to decide for themselves.

My guess is because the writer does not speak any Latin and thinks it must be an abbreviation of something
