I found this specimen at in Washington County, MO and am not sure where to start with identifying it!

I apologize if I am doing this post incorrectly. I am still figuring out the site.

Hi Kaprak, I have collected the area a number of times. My guess would be Galena (lead sulfide). It looks very weathered. Some suggestions I have found helpful to me 1) visit local library for rock & mineral books 2) search out & join a local rock collectors club 3) visit a local gem & mineral show 4) subscribe to one of the many good mineral magazines. and of course follow the many fine posts on this site. Enjoy this great hobby.

Hi Kaprak,

Mike is correct. You have found a very weathered galena. Galena is relatively common in that area as well as drusy quartz which is all over the place and a lot of barite which is white when broken.

The criss-cross pattern you see is the weathering and alteration of the galena along cleavage planes. It is likely altering to cerussite (PbCO3) where you see the white lines.

Try reading this page:

https://www.mineral-forum.com/message-board/viewtopic.php?p=19487#19487

If it is Galena that streak will be lead-grey and the hardness 2.5 ( https://www.mindat.org/min-1641.html )

I agree - weathered Galena
