This is a rutile crystal I found in the bottom of an alpine-type fissure just as it pinched out. I'm not sure if the termination is the result of contact with the mica crystals (always present in these fissures) or if it is the result of some sort of healing, or both. Perhaps, just simply an odd termination. Whatever the case, I was happy to find it.

My guess is that this strange-looking end is where the crystal grew out of another mineral which has somehow been removed. What does the other termination look like?

The other end was the attachment point else it was a floater that broke at that end.

Funny you say that because if it weren't for the fact that it literally punctured my thumb I may not have even noticed it. I'm thankful that I've gotten into the habit of breaking up all the clumps of clay and dirt that I remove from the fissures I'm excavating.

Almost all of the rutile I have found in my area is reticulated rutile. Occassionally I've seen strands of golden rutile here and there but I love the red stuff.

For me, rutile, brookite and anatase are the best for microcollection....
Here an image of rutile...
