Hi Jessica:
Welcome and thanks for sharing your minerals with us. I question one identification, however. Your "titanite from Russia" looks very much like a vesuvianite from China. How certain are you of the provenance?

I am not sure of the label, the only reason why that is what I have labeled it as is that that is what the dealer's label said - so I am not certain of it. I agree that it looks a lot like a vesuvianite. Maybe the labels got mixed up.
It looks like it has tetragonal symmetry like vesuvianite, not monoclinic like titanite.

Jessica. You might double-check the label for the "Spangolite from the Mex Tex Mine, New Mexico". It very much resembles one of the copper oxides from Mina Ojuela, Mapimi, Durango, Mexico.

Thanks for pointing that out! I looked at the pictures of spangolite from Mex-Tex mine and a lot of them look similar to mine. I looked at the photo, though, and the color is not quite accurate, the crystals are more like the color of cavansite. I also looked at some photos of copper minerals from Mina Ojuela, and the colors look a lot like the color in the photo I took. Is the color the reason why you thought it might not be spangolite?

Jordi, thanks for the link! Many of those pictures look exactly like my "titanite"... I think it's pretty safe to say it's a vesuvianite from Hebei Province, China.

Spangolite from the Mex-Tex not only has a characteristic color for which cavansite is not a bad approximation, but it also has very characteristic hexagonal crystals which are almost prismatic, but taper slightly toward each end. One very good image was posted on the forum recently. Here's another, from my collection. If your crystals look like these, I can't imagine what else they could be other than spangolite!

Thanks Pete, I just looked at my piece under the microscope and found that many of the crystals were too small or too intergrown with other crystals to tell. However, I did find two very nice crystals which show the tapered prismatic habit.
That is a beautiful photo, too! What is the acicular green mineral? My piece has a vug filled entirely with crystals exactly like it.

I do not know for sure, but I presume that the acicular green mineral is brochantite. The general rule is that if it came from the Mex-Tex, and if it's green, it's brochantite. In my experience this is true (as a general rule). You might encounter some other green minerals, but they would be less than 10% of the specimens you would find. If you don't have a way to test each specimen, you have to go with the general rule, and record the fact that you are not sure of the identity!

Thank you Jessica for the fine pictures of your specimens.
I am glad you had a chance to also collect some yourself!
Then one understands more easily how hard it is to find really beautiful specimens.
If one is working hard at a locality and is "lucky" to find a nice pocket, perhaps one or two small specimens are really really beautiful. At mineralshows we are getting so spoiled having a chance to buy so many wonderful minerals, the best finds of thousands of people digging year round under hard conditions.

| I could see that vesuvianite being mixed up with a sphene crystal..they do look pretty similar. Jordi's link is spot on for your stone..well done ,John, on the catch
