I decided to try my hand at mineral art. I painted this on a 4x5 inch canvas with acrylic paint. I know it's my regrettably enhanced smokey, but it had a nice form and it made a nice trial run on this small canvas. Enjoy. There's likely to be more to come, I just need to find some new subjects to paint. Maybe a pyrite.

Turbo,
As it seems that you will publish more paints, do you want a separate thread?
If yes, please just let me know the name of the thread and I will locate it in the section "Mineralogical Literature" with other similar threads like "My Latest Watercolour Painting..." or "Digital Art"

Jordi,
That would be great. I think it would be nice to have a single thread for "Mineral Illustration." That way everyone's art could be displayed and viewed together. What do you think? Either way, I think "Mineral Illustration" is a good title.

If you do a forum for illustrations, many of us will add to it, as there are lots of people who also dabble in painting of minerals. I think that would be fun.

I think a category on here for all the artists on here to show off their works would be a great idea

Ok, we will do it!.
Please some help: Gail could you send to me a tittle for the new Forum and a short descriptive text similar to the other descriptive texts of the other Fora?

Here is my latest painting based on a pyrite specimen I have from the Alimón Mine, Peru. I started by photographing the specimen in a small area that I wanted to focus on, which was about 1 cm across. As I was painting, I "trimmed" away the rest of the plate so that the painting wouldn't look too busy and "corrected" the lighting so that the crystal faces would look more distinct. As with the quartz painting, I did a little idealizing/repair while painting, but not enough to retract from the characteristics of the species or of the locality. Pyrite is difficult to photograph and it's challenging to get that metallic look on canvas.

Great job, Turbo. You have succeeded in achieving the metallic luster of the pyrite.

Thank you, Michael. Sometimes as the artist, it's harder to stand back and see what other people see. But as long as other people can see that it is metallic, then I know I have succeeded.

Turbo, very impressive indeed! My background was, not only an artist, but an art gallery owner for 23 years. ( I worked at six other galleries before striking out on my own. )
Trust me when I tell you your work is good!

Incredible work, Turbo! Come on Steve, let's see some of yours! And Gail, Jim tells me you've tried your hand at mineral art....any chance we might be able to take a peak?

Thanks, Gail! My painting has been mostly a hobby. I've only ever sold one painting and I haven't been in any exhibits or galleries. Feel free to post some of your work. We'd love to see it.
