Hi all,
Quick question.
I have been given two specimens, orpiment and realgar, labelled as being from Zanat, Italy.
A quick search on the Mindat database came up with nothing for Zanat and i was wondering if any members here may be able to provide some help with information for this location.
Thanks in advance.

Hi Philip -
Are you certain that the locality information is accurate/reliable? It might be helpful if you posted some photos.

Hi Tracy,
Thanks for responding.
The orpiment and realgar show no particular form or matrix that could aid in locality identification and i would post a picture if i thought it would help in any way but it probably wouldn't. The mineral ID's are correct.
My main query regards the location name given on the accompanying label. As i posted earlier, the location is simply given as Zanat, Italy.
Quick searches on Mindat and Google came up with nothing and, because i have little knowledge of Italian geography, i am just seeking confirmation of Zanat as being an Italian area or town or province etc. plus any possible mineral or mine information if Zanat is indeed located in Italy.
I do accept that the location is most probably wrong and these specimens may well become orphans but i thought it may be useful to see if any Italian members or collectors of Italian minerals could offer any thoughts.
Cheers.

Hi Philip, hi Tracy and hi to everydody!
I'm Italian, but this locality, spelled like that, tells me nothing at all. However I promise I will look for a similarly spelled locality in my country and be properer about the location (Italy is not so big like the US, however it is as big as Illinois or Michigan more or less!). When I have found it, I will write again!

Hi Riccardo,
Many thanks for responding to this question and any help you can provide regarding a possible 'Zanat' location would be much appreciated!
Cheers.

Hi to everybody!
As a matter of fact, I found a locality called Zanat, but not in Italy. For what i saw, it would be in Hungary, close to the city of Szombathely!
I hope I was useful for everybody. If I find anything else, I will write again!

Hi Riccardo,
Thank you for the reply.
There is also a Zanat in Turkey too but i don't think these specimens come from either the Hungary or Turkey locations. There is no mineral or mine information for either place.
I will try to contact the original owner and ask if he has the location ... he is away from home at the moment but will be back probably next week.
Again .. thank you for the help.

Hi!
Ok let me know! Now I'm curious! If it is really in Italy, then I can try to locate it!

Philip,
At this point I agree with Tracy that we should have an image of the Orpiment/Realgar. Then, instead to do a blind search we would have some reference... |

Hi all,
Just to tidy this thread up ...
Finally had contact with the previous owner and the specimens are from a 19th Century academic collection with the location stated as being Zanat, Hungary.
I will take a few photos if this is still of interest.
Cheers.
