I recently met an artist who paints flowers and fungi, and a few flints. So I suggested to her that she could always try the challenge of painting mineral specimens. I lent her a few specimens from my collection so that she can practice and see what she thinks. Her comment was 'at least they do not die or move'.
I attach a couple of examples to see what you all think. She has taken away a few more 'rocks' to practice on and see how it goes and I cannot wait to see the results.

Great work! I think with Fred Wilda's exhibit and new artists showing up on the forum, we might have a little mineral illustration revival on our hands! I would be very interested in doing paintings of some famous pieces someday.

The size is given as 8x5 cm, is that the actual size of the painting? The renditions are great. I am only inquiring about the size.

Barbara's art is excellent and she has a great sensitivity for details. I assume she is using watercolors for her work. Could you please let her know that I would consider her for an article in Rocks & Minerals magazine.
Thanks,
Susan Robinson

That is the specimen size, not the size of the painting. I thought it best to give the specimen size. The paintings are basically life size too.
Susan
So far she has only painted two specimens so we might need to give her a chance to do a few more. But I will let her know

I attach Barbara's latest work of art. Sadly she still has the specimen so at the moment I do not know the exact size of the specimen but I have given a rough estimate of the specimen size.
I hope you enjoy this one too

Barbara has been sick recently - new joints were required! The good news is that she is back on her feet and very keen to paint more mineral specimens. If you are interested in having one done send me a PM and I will see what I can do to help.

I think her work is wonderful and really captures the minerals she paints. I try to encourage her to do more, but let's see if she is willing

Here is the next painting Barbara has done, of a fluorite twin from the Heights quarry. It was done so as to look at how angles have to be correct, especially in a twin. I think she has really captured the twin very well, along with its transparency and internal features.
Mineral: | Fluorite, Quartz |
Locality: | Heights Quarry, Westgate, Weardale, North Pennines Orefield, County Durham, England / United Kingdom | |
|
Dimensions: | 6 x 5 x 5 cm |
Description: |
Color is that under artificial light |
