PostPosted: Nov 14, 2012 15:19    Post subject: Hisingerite? Specimen

I purchased this specimen at a mineral show, where I had no references to confirm the ID. It does not appear to match the online descriptions and images of hisingerite that I have found. Mindat describes hisingerite as being black or brownish-black; but I see nothing of those colors on the specimen. Though the specimen is labeled as a pseudomorph, I would not think that would have anything to do with its color. If the ID is correct, I would like to know whether any more specific locality information is available.

Looks more complicated than a simple hisingerite replacement of ilvaite. Hisingerite normally looks like brown beer bottle glass and generally forms as an alteration of pyrite.

Hisingerite pseudomorphs after ilvaite are well known from Dalnegorsk and are cited in Bernard and Hyrsl.

A similar specimen is online at dalerocks dot com but this bulletin board does not allow me to post the entire link.

The outer coating does not look likely to be hisingerite

You see the same hisingerite after ilvaite in the rhodochrosite-bearing calcic-iron skarns in the Main Silicate Body of the Potosi Mine at Santa Eulalia and probably Uchuchaqua as well...but not the whitish coating.

The Hisingerite could be brown, like the recent ones from Huanggang described by Berthold Ottens in his recent article in the Record or like the yellowish-brownish ones from Broken Hill, Australia, so why not...?

The whitish coating seems cover another brownish material, so it could be Hissingerite after Ilvaite covered by whitish carbonates.

Thanks. I looked at the Dale Rocks specimen, which he lists under Ilvaite. He states, "I have seen identical samples from Czech dealers labelled Hisingerite." Are there any Czech members of the forum who might know whether that was ever verified by analysis?

Here is a quick scan of the other side of the specimen. Could the thin, orange-brown, crystalline coating be the hisingerite? If so, it is not a significant component of the pseudomorph by volume. The interior is white to pale rose.
