|
|
Here are a few from this huge iron mine...
Description: |
Calcite Hercules Mine, Municipio de Camargo, Chihuahua, Mexico 191 x 87 x 65 mm
This cluster of Calcite crystals consists of both elongated scalenahedrons and butterfly twins (to 44 mm) with a reddish tinge from Hematite inclusions that deepens in color towards the centers of the Calcite crystals forming nice Hematite phantoms. The Calcites also display distinct chatoyancy. Although it presents damage around the margins where it was removed, it is one of the only surviving specimens from what was reportedly a large, several meters long cave completely covered by such Calcite. It was given to me by Francisco Aguilera who worked at the Hercules Mine and actually collected it. Casey Jones and I met Francisco through the mine office because he spoke some English. |

Description: |
Magnetite Hercules Mine, Municipio de Camargo, Chihuahua, Mexico 69 x 55 x 33 mm
Black, octahedral Magnetite crystals to 25 mm are intergrown and lightly accented by rusty-red Hematite. In excellent conditon, this specimen was self collected during the 1993 Grossular collecting trip Graham and I took. The outcrop lies just outside the mine, and was pointed out to us by Felix who was a mining engineer at the Hercules mine, following some exploratory blasting. |

Good eye Bob. It would have been very easy to overlook this piece as just another "cactus quartz" typical of that area.

Everyone is familiar with the Rhodos from here, but few of the Apatite specimens are seen. Here is a specimen I picked up.
Description: |
Fluorapatite on Quartz with Rhodochrosite
Wutong Mine, Liubao, Cangwu Co., Wuzhou Prefecture, Guangxi Zhuang A.R., China 100 x 59 x 40 mm
Multiple purple Apatites with greenish cores, to 15 x 5 mm on matrix of small Quartz crystals, accented by a Rhodochrosite disc measuring 19 mm across. |

Here is a bit of a rarity from China...
Description: |
Stibnite with Fluorite Qinglong Mine, Dachang Sb Ore Field, Qinglong Co., Qianxi'nan Autonomous Prefecture, Guizhou Province, China
86 x 73 x 68 mm
Most specimens from this locality are coated with pale Fluorite, but these Stibnite crystals are covered with strong lavender-purple Fluorite. |

I agree with Greg. It is an outstanding specimen. I also like the Stibnite with Fluorite and the Wulfenites.

Beautiful piece Bob. Stibnite and fluorite is an association that I would least imagine.

A new Helvite from Huanggangliang in China...came out about 2 months ago.
Lustrous brownish three-dimensional stack of Helvite crystals perched on a matrix of green Quartz points. Several small Quartz points are perched on the Helvite. The cluster of Helvite is 57 mm tall by 63 mm wide. Displays from all side and is damage free. Really difficult to photograph, and the helvite is much richer colored in person.

After viewing the specimens shown here I get a sinking feeling I've wasted close to $10K on specimens I have bought. I simply love seeing the natural beauty! As a retired physical sciences teacher I have learned much in the past 2.5 years since I started collecting and still enjoy looking at my displays daily. I now post the "Mineral of the Week" on my Facebook page which seems to be enjoyed by many viewers.
Guess I didn't waste money after-all, because I enjoy them so much and the info. I provide allows me to continue teaching.
Yours are fantastic!! Id love to see them in person.

Here is a Xuebaoding combo I picked up in Tucson. Quartz associations for some reason are very uncommon.
Description: |
Scheelite and Quartz on Muscovite Mt. Xuebaoding, Pingwu County, Mianyang Prefecture, Sichuan Province, China 174 x 98 x 51 mm overall Five orange Scheelites to 30 mm are nestled in a matrix of Muscovite. Clear Quartz points, some doubly terminated, to 29 x 12 mm accent the specimen. |
