Hi Tom,

Hope you are enjoying your viewing/listening. I hope to start posting some more of my collection soon; we just returned from Tucson with a few new goodies. By the way, welcome to the Forum.

I like that zoned amethyst with its little brother sitting on his shoulder ;-)

Thanks for the comment Tobi. No, unfortunately I did not collect the sceptered amethyst. It was collected by Joe George from Cascade Scepters.

The southern Illinois fluorspar district has been one focus of my collecting energies for more than 45 years. I was fortunate to find several nice pieces in Tucson to add to this sub-collection and will show some of them in the next few posts.

Fluorite - Henson Mine.jpg

Henson Mine, Illinois-Kentucky Fluorspar Mining District, Pope County, Illinois, USA

More from the southern Illinois fluorite district. In April/May 1995 a pocket of pink strontianite was found by drill operator Eugene Turner during pillar-robbing. That pocket was considered the best of the pink strontianite pockets in the mine. The following two pieces are examples from that pocket.

Strontianite - Minerva Mine.jpg
 Mineral: Strontianite
 Locality:
Minerva I Mine, Ozark-Mahoning group, Cave-in-Rock Sub-District, Hardin County, Illinois, USA
 Dimensions: 4.5 x 6.8 cm
 Description:
A combination of pastel pink acicular strontianite and blue fluorite. This piece is notable for its association with fluorite as most specimens were pure strontianite.

Great pink Strontianite specimens, Michael.

Gwen and I enjoyed seeing you and Laura in Tucson.

Mike,

I am really enjoying the new Southern Illinois specimens you have been posting. The strontianites, especially are very beautiful.

A couple of notes:

Many of the recent specimens (I think the majority actually) that you have posted were in the former collection of Les Tolonen. Les has been a staple at many mineral shows in Ohio that I have attended and he has always had a wonderful collection of So. Illinois specimens for sale, many which I now own. He mentioned to me last year that he was planning on retiring from his mineral business (North American Minerals) within the next few years. He sold the majority of his collection to Ross Lillie.

It’s wonderful to know that many of these now have new homes!

The Bahama Pod Ore body has a rather interesting story:

According to Ross, The Bahama Ore Body was discovered by drilling a cross section of diamond drill holes at near right angles to the main Denton Mine trend. The Bahama Ore Body was narrow and relatively small, but rich enough to justify development by driving a drift from operating mine workings. The ore was intersected a few hundred feet to the southeast and affectionately named the Bahama Ore Body since it was south of the main trend and "on the way to the Bahamas". Ore was mined on two separate levels, namely the Rosiclare and Sub-Rosiclare Horizons.

The finest calcites ever found in the district were collected from the Sub-Rosiclare Level. Hundreds of superb glassy orange calcites were found in pockets interconnected by fractures along strike. Single crystals of 30 cm were found in cavities measuring up to 8 meters.

As stated the specimens were mined in the years 1991 to 1993.

Great to see more So. Illinois!
