Didn't know where to post this. I bought a specimen from a known prior collection. How do I properly acknowledge on my display label that the specimen is from this collection?
I see " Ex. collection owner" on some online specimens in this situation.
What exactly is "Ex." short for?
What is the best way to go? |

Hi Frank,
"Ex" is a word, not an abbreviation (e.g., ex wife). It basically means "former" or "formerly".
Cheers

"EX" is Latin for "from" as in "EX LIBRIS"- "from the library". |

I use 'Ex', as it is a word. Don't get me started on abreviations versus contractions! |

There should not be a period after. Just a general observation - some people and some dealers put ex or Ex [name] for nearly every specimen they know who owned it before. In my own collection, I ONLY put that [even if I know it] if the person was quite famous in the mineral collecting world. That is my 'standard' - but it is of course for everyone to decide for themselves. |

My guess is because the writer does not speak any Latin and thinks it must be an abbreviation of something
