Hello all. I just wish to share with you guys an experience that I had with my two younger sons while digging through some old boxes in our attic. To my suprise, I found several pieces of calcite that I collected in TX along a road side many yrs ago. Sort of insignificant looking. To my sons they were amazed by it's color and beauty. That was over a two months ago. Being they are only six and nine I figured their fascInation would wear off over time. Quite the opposite. We live on the coastal plain of NE North Carolina where it's pretty dull geologically. Kind of hard looking for minerals around a swamp. I'm not an avid collector by no means. Though my interest is starting to reignite as I use to have nice collection many yrs ago. My sons are dying to go to a dig somewhere locally. I hear NC is rich source of minerals, many which are rare. Anyone have any good recommendations for family friendly sites for digs within NC or even VA? Its amazing to hear my boys say they would rather find shiny rocks and learning about them than play their x box.

Also you can use this link: "A mineralogical trip through the states of USA - North Carolina" -> https://www.mineral-forum.com/message-board/viewtopic.php?t=1379 to see some minerals from North Carolina, as well as this link for NC localities -> https://www.mindat.org/loc-4033.html and this other link for many other images of NC specimens -> https://www.mindat.org/gallery.php?loc=4033

Hopefully it helps

There is a rock club that regularly holds trips to mines and locations to collect rocks mostly in NC but many throughout the south east. Look up MAGMA. (Mountain Area Gem and Mineral Association). Their motto is 1% talk 99% digging -- my kind of club. Check it out.
