| Do you have any more details about this? where its from etc etc? The more information you give us the more likely you are to get a firm ID, on the basis of the picture it looks a bit like Crinoids in mudstone

| sorry the guy who gave it to me had no idea what it was. It's hard stuff like a jasper in hardness I guess. I am new here and will learn how to post better in the future with better details.

2 - LOCALITY,?
3 - MATRIX, I would compare it to a jasper from the way it cut.
4 – COLOR, completely opaque no crystals or agate. colors are from a green/black to a pea green to an od green and a yellow green.
5 - LUSTER non metalic

Its an "agate" of some sort. Other than that determination, the lapidary people have all kinds of names for them based on how they look which has nothing to do with chemistry. They are typically cryptocrystalline quartz with various impurities. There are several good books on agates on the market.

| No it is not hard enough to be agate. Perhaps this is the wrong forum for my rocks. Does anyone know of a rock id forum that is for rockhounds and lapidary types?

| To me your rock looks like a rhyolitic lava. But you have to understand that by just looking at a picture this is a guess.

I really don't think this forum is for rock identification. I posted these pictures in a yahoo rockhounding group yesterday and got them all named by 4 different members.

I don't understand...you say it cannot be agate, but jasper. As long as I know both have the same hardness, so where is the problem?

I'm afraid you are confused. Agate and Jasper both are varieties of Chalcedony ( https://www.mindat.org/search.php?name=agate and https://www.mindat.org/search.php?name=jasper ), so both should have the same hardness: 6½ - 7.
I believe that the problem is that you are looking for commercial names and here we use the real name of the minerals, which is, in my opinion, much better and safer.
