Very nice. My favourite is the cacoxenite, especially the broken hemisphere. Very well rendered.

16x20" is a pretty good size for a mineral illustration. I know it would take me a long time!

Hallo, thank you for your message. I remember, that I was painting for about 8 hours, till the painting was done. If someone is interested, I can post some more paintings tomorrow.

Feel free to keep posting. It's interesting to see the variety of styles in mineral illustration.

again some more paintings from 2012.
Dear artists,
I had an idea: we all should paint the same mineral. Then the paintings are shown together. I would like to read your opinions. Of course everyone is free, so you can say yes or no. I think it would be wonderful to see the different facets of this mineral through artists eyes. Each painting is one facet, like a puzzle. Put together you see the mineral in full size.

Great paintings! I assume the minerals are micromounts. They are difficult to do, especially is you are looking through a microscope and then trying to capture by painting what you just saw. It's a great strain on the eyes and I commend your efforts -.

Thanks for answering. I'm not working with a microscope. I use a good photo (most are taken of the Mineralienatlas, there are very good ones) and put it large on my screen. My easel stands right beside and I paint with some light on the canvas. Sometimes I am painting "Stillleben" (fruits on plates for example) or flowers. Most of these paintings are done without using a photo. But for landscapes I often use photos, because the sun is more quickly, than I can paint (oil on canvas takes a little longer than watercolours).

I love the idea of all painting the same mineral! Count me in.

The depth of talent on this site is inspiring. If I could put my two cents in, I think the photos by Matteo Chinellato might be a source for this exercise. I'm not sure how his copyright might be involved or if he would participate, but his technique is amazing, and lends itself to this effort. Would you consider your paintings to be "still life" in the classic sense? Thank you all for sharing your talents.A very cool idea.

Thanks to all of you for your interest in my work and my idea. My mineral paintings may be titled "Stillleben", but my technic is inspired by the impressionism. So the painting seems to live, the colours look like moving.
Before I showed my paintings in public, I asked Stefan Schorn, the boss of the Mineralatlas, wether any fotograph (Matteo Chinellato is one of them) would mind it, because of copyright. He told me, that no one would mind it, and until today I had no problems.
