I spent some years of my child hood living in northern Derbyshire and got my father to collect minerals for me when he went caving. So 'Blue John' flourite features in my collection, but, sadly, not these two specimens

Significant finds of lead minerals (including a number of rarities) were made in the Whitwell Quarry during the 1980s, from a fault crossing the quarry which contained mixed lead/vanadium mineralisation.

The Peaks District in Derbyshire, like Weardale further north has been a major lead and fluorspar-producing region in the UK. Unlike Weardale, however, the Derbyshire mines have not produced many decent fluorite specimens, other than, perhaps the "Blue John" lapidary material from around Castleton. Specimens, like this one from the Ladywash Mine are often heavily included with fine grained sulfides.

Back in the 80s a wholesaler friend of mine bought a van load of fluorite from Ladywash Mine. If I took the lot he offered it to me for £6 a flat. Each individual piece would now fetch five or six times that. If only I knew then what I know now :-(

I can quote similar stories. Life is a learning experience, if we pay attention.

Calcite on fluorite, with fine grained pyrite from the Ladywash Mine, Eyam, Derbyshire. Old label says that it was collected in February, 1979, which would be around the time that the mine closed. Interesting to see two different habits of calcite crystals - scalenohedron and "butterfly" twin. FOV = 8 cm.
