PostPosted: Jun 26, 2014 04:58    Post subject: Capturing color change of Alexandrite

Alexandrite is well-known for a color change effect under different lights (white and warm). Most photos on the web are shot separately, and only a few are shot under dual lights.

I photographed my alexandrite specimen lit by dual LED lights (white and yellow), and got quite a nice result. You can not only see quite clearly the color shift from side to side, but also see some characteristic inclusions from this locality.

Nice images, thanks for sharing. Would be interesting also some photos with single light to see the difference.

Very interesting, and a very nicely shaped crystal. I would think the light source on the right is a tungsten light bulb, and the one on the left is LED; is that correct?

My mum once bought a small cut 'amethyst' in a shop in India, and when she took it outdoors and looked at it in daylight it was green! I told her it was alexandrite, but almost certainly the flawless gem was man-made. I hope.

Both are LED lights. The right LED light has warm yellow color.

It might be good to specify the make and model of your LED lights so people can know what light sources you used. I have tried many models of led flashlights and have found considerable range in color temperature and color rendering index (CRI) in commercial LED flashlights. There are flashlight fanatics who have much to say about the quality of various LED light sources.

I'm afraid I could not find detailed info of my LED flashlights. They use CREE LED component, one emits white light, and another emits yellow light.
