Does anyone know how to make fluorescent calcite with manganese. I am following Fonda's studies, but it didn't work out. I wonder what was his trick? I would like to have detailed information on the procedure. Thanks. |

Hi, Parvin
I found this, and seems quite easy.
But the paper makes it clear that the activator is stannous ion.
And it makes it clear that stannic ion does not work.
Manganese only changes colour....
Did you do this way (the calcium chloride plus stannous salt plus manganese salt, adding later the ammonium carbonate)?
With best wishes
Lluís
P.D.: ammonium carbonate is not that easy to find...Many are ammonium carbamate |

Hi Luis,
Thanks for your answer, but I don't want to use stannous ion, I would like to make calcite fluorescent just by using manganese. Any idea? |

Then, Parvin, I fear that it would not work....
The work says that activator is stannous ion.
Manganese is just an "phospor"
To be sure, if you place the calcium chloride plus the amount of manganese sulphate or nitrate and adds the ammonium carbonate in the respective amount and do procedure of heating and so, and it does not work, well, you have the confirmation of *need* of stannous ion....
With best wishes

The "conventional wisdom" is that lead (divalent lead ions, Pb(II)) often serves as a co-activator with Mn(II) to make calcite fluorescent. I would try adding a trace of a lead salt such as lead acetate or nitrate, to see if it produced the red or orange fluorescence with manganese. |

I did that too, it is fluorescent with manganese, but I am just interested to do it only with Manganese itself. |

With just pure manganese alone may not work; my understanding has been that a coactivator is always required; the manganese alone does not have the requisite energy levels needed to absorb the UV photons. |

What I have got is just kind of yellowish, it is totally different with pure calcium carbonate shows in UV light. Just wanted to make sure that I am getting something...... |

I once (a very long time ago!) myself tried making doped & fluorescent calcium carbonate, precipitated from water with various metal salts added. I think I obtained somewhat the same results as you--a yellowish or yellowish white fluorescence, not nearly as bright as the "classic" red-orange typical of natural fluorescent calcite, when only manganese was added--unless I added the addition coactivator, such as Pb(2+). |
