I'm glad you like it Pierre! I examined and photographed the taaffeite nearly two years ago now so I'm really excited that this unique analysis finally has been published -- I don't think anything quite like it has been written up anywhere before (I could be wrong, but never-the-less, it is a fun problem to explore). For those who were at my Rochester Mineralogical Symposium presentation, this is related to the halos we are studying in diamond and the research we've been doing at the synchrotron light source facilities. For me, this type of project takes gemology to a whole new level and is what is behind my interest in minerals, optics, crystallography...and so much more.
Best wishes,

PS: I hope everyone followed the link and was able to watch the embedded video in mineralogist Nathan Renfro's article. It really is fantastic! (and is not included in the hardcopy issue, though I wish an actual disc of it was bundled with the journal!) Nathan’s explanation for the phenomenon is articulated as masterfully as his photomicrography captures the scene! _________________ Elise Skalwold |
