PostPosted: Apr 28, 2016 14:32    Post subject: The Micro-World and inclusions in minerals

Hi,

Filing this under the "Minerals and Mineralogy" section in hopes that the free open access content will appeal to those interested in learning more about what inclusions in minerals can tell us and how to go about studying them.

Our quarterly Micro-World column now features a "Quarterly Crystal" section debuting with this entry by mineralogist John I. Koivula who just gave a fantastic presentation at the recent Rochester Mineralogical Symposium (RMS):
Quartz and Lazulite https://www.gia.edu/gems-gemology/spring-2016-microworld-quarterly-crystal-quartz-lazulite

Two wonderful presentations at the RMS were on radioactive minerals (Peter Burns: "The Societal Importance of Uranium Minerals and Mineral-inspired Materials" and Bob Lauf: "Mineralogy of Uranium and Thorium") which I found very interesting and informative, especially in light of studying this inclusion: A Halo in a Sri Lankan Taaffeite
https://www.gia.edu/gems-gemology/spring-2016-microworld-halo-sri-lankan-taaffeite

We hope you will find all of the latest entries compelling invitations to join us in Micro-World:

"A Fantastic Display of Phase Changes in a Sapphire’s Fluid Inclusion" https://www.gia.edu/gems-gemology/spring-2016-microworld-fantastic-display-phase-changes-sapphires-fluid-inclusion (don't miss the video)

"Olivine in Oregon Labradorite" https://www.gia.edu/gems-gemology/spring-2016-microworld-olivine-oregon-labradorite

"Dolomite with Unusual Inclusions" https://www.gia.edu/gems-gemology/spring-2016-microworld-dolomite-unusual-inclusions

"Iridescent Inclusions in Scapolite" https://www.gia.edu/gems-gemology/spring-2016-microworld-iridescent-inclusions-scapolite

"Shrinkage “Footprint in Rose Quartz" https://www.gia.edu/gems-gemology/spring-2016-microworld-shrinkage-footprint-rose-quartz

This is our 4th edition since the column's debut in the Summer 2015 issue and we are delighted with the great feedback and enthusiastic response. For an introduction, see https://www.gia.edu/gems-gemology/summer-2015-microworld-introduction-gems

I'm glad you like it Pierre! I examined and photographed the taaffeite nearly two years ago now so I'm really excited that this unique analysis finally has been published -- I don't think anything quite like it has been written up anywhere before (I could be wrong, but never-the-less, it is a fun problem to explore). For those who were at my Rochester Mineralogical Symposium presentation, this is related to the halos we are studying in diamond and the research we've been doing at the synchrotron light source facilities. For me, this type of project takes gemology to a whole new level and is what is behind my interest in minerals, optics, crystallography...and so much more.

Best wishes,
Elise

PS: I hope everyone followed the link and was able to watch the embedded video in mineralogist Nathan Renfro's article. It really is fantastic! (and is not included in the hardcopy issue, though I wish an actual disc of it was bundled with the journal!) Nathan’s explanation for the phenomenon is articulated as masterfully as his photomicrography captures the scene!
