Thank you Tobi, I find these old samples very evocative, all the hands they have passed through on their journey to my shelves and all the changes in the world these samples have survived.
Here is a Gregory Calcite likewise merely labelled "Cumberland" At a guess Id say somewhere in the Alston Moor area possibly Rampgill because of the Fluorite casts on the back of the piece, but I could be totally wrong. Rampgill was worked from as early as 1690.
Any advice on cleaning samples with 140 year old paper labels glued to them would be appreciated, the best advice Ive had so far is "Dont"

Strontianite from North Yorkshire and a really strange Fluorite from Skears Mine, its a bit dinged but a fascinating formation. Id be interested to know how the purple cube formed ? its a real brain teaser.

A few more, these are from Asia. Afghanite that is double terminated, Quartz with Chlorite patches (Not in the photo) and one of those neat orangey coloured Topaz crystals from Skardu.

This first piece looks like a gargoyle. Calcite on galena included Quartz on Galena, From Bulgaria. The second an ear. The ear seems to have some cast's on it, my guess would be they're after rhombohedral Calcite crystals.

You rarely see material from Hartsop Hall, just the odd older piece, this piece has yellow Fluorite to 5 mm and Galena to 2 mm. I also came across these purple Fluorite's labelled as from El Hammam, I liked the way one has octahedral modifications on the edges and the other is octahedral. I was wondering if the piece showing the octahedra is etched.

Hi Nurbo. Now Jordi is on a trip but both of us are pretty sure that the last two fluorites come actually from Tounfit, Boumia, Morocco: deep violet color, modified cubes as well as octahedra, zoning...
If you do not mind, I can change the labels.
Regarding the first fluorite, the modifications seem to be rhombododecahedral modifications, not octahedral ones, or at least the main modifications.
I arranged with Jordi and Carles Curto to publish several questions on these amazing fluorites from Tounfit, but my time is very scarce this year. I will try to do it as soon as I can.
Greetings

Hi Antonio,
I dont know re the locality, I bought them. Your right about the modified edges though, thanks for pointing out my mistake, modified corners give octahedra edges give dodecahedra.

Is true that these Fluorites don't match el Hamman but now at home and with a better vision of your images I should recognize that them don't match Tounfit neither, so let El Hamman, as you have this information...

So last Saturday I took the 100 mile up hill and down dale journey to visit a very rainy Bakewell and spend some money I couldnt afford, one Vendor (Who's name escapes me) had the first piece Im going to show today, Ive seen oodles of Sand Rose's before but never from Kent!!
I also bagged this pretty little red/orange Campylite from Dry Gill, one day I may try and trim it some more, there are a lot of partials on it which detract from the main event, as it were. There did seem to be a lot of Campylite up for grabs this year.

Here is my current favourite piece it is from an unnamed dump at Arkengarthdale in North Yorkshire, The (~2mm) white crystal's which are scattered around the surface of this piece are actually very densely formed cluster's of sub millimeter terminated Baryte crystal's,
Now I've had my knee operation I should be able to raise the money for a microscope, then Ill be able to take photo's of such detail's, these photo's are all 48 frame stack's using combinez. I particularly like the corroded termination's on this piece where you can see the Witherite underneath.
Ive been after a Veracruz Amethyst for a while but just a small one, I found this reverse sceptred Amethyst at Bakewell.last month.

I think you are doing an excellent job with your close-ups. Very sharp. Much better than I can do. I particularly liked the campylite 4jpg : https://www.mineral-forum.com/message-board/files/4_121.jpg

Thank you for your kind words John,
I do take a lot of photo's, over 17000 so far, Id describe my setup as amusingly low tech. the background is ordinary black card, the lighting comes from a small LED torch that cost just a few pounds, I soften the light with a piece of foam over the lens and I have a silver reflector (Which is actually a cardboard and tinfoil cake base).which I use to reflect sunlight into dark areas. Ive always been one for improvising. I am thinking its about time I got a new camera though, Im not happy with how grainy a lot of the photos i take are.

Hi Pierre,
I have been quiet of late, its been a funny time, I had to have some surgery and stuff, the price of getting old and working for a living Im afraid.
Funny really I got a round to doing some photos the other day and they were all rubbish I must be out of the habit.
Here are a couple of interesting ones though. A couple of years ago I happened across a large chunk of Dolomite matrix veined with Marcasite and the odd Pyrite crystal, now on most of the samples I kept there are yellow crystals of what Im guessing is Sulphur (?), which I find amazing, I would never have believed enough Sulphur (?) would have been released to recrystallize in as little as two years. Here are a couple of not very good photo's.

Hi David,
I've seen these develop on quite a few of these little marcasite/pyrite pieces and would also like to know what these pale yellow decomposition growths are. I was wondering if they could be copiapite?

Hiya Phil,
Interesting possibility, Copiapite is soluble in H2O, whereas Sulphur isn't, so this should be an easy one. Ill do a test tomorrow and report back.

So I managed to remove a small piece of Dolomite with some of the yellow crystals attached and put it in a small amount of warm water, then watched at 10x magnification as the yellow crystals fell off the Dolomite and dissolved, to ensure they werent just falling off I stirred the residue after removing the Dolomite with a small needle and they were definitely dissolved, no solids were left at all, damn good call Phil. Here is a better photo of the alleged Copiapite(?) I received last night forming on another sample from the same find.
